What is a normal price to have a used vehicle looked at by a mechanic prior to purchasing it ? Not looking to nit pick it but to look for any major defects .

It really depends on the shop and how much they do.

If they just scan it and drive it? They might charge less than an hour.
Pull the wheels off to fully inspect the brakes, wheel bearings, and suspension? Expect a little more
If they go all out, hook it up to a set of A/C gauges, check it on the alignment rack, drop the transmission pan for inspection, read the plugs, check compression...etc... then you are getting into the $100s of $$$ range.

In most cases, the service writer is going to go for at least one hour.

Thanks for the info . I was guessing around the $100 range for a quick lookover but I figure you get what you pay for as well . Ball joints and suspension work can wind up being costly in the lond run .

Probably an hour of labor at a dealer, so $125 or more. You really want someone who knows your make /model well, and usually your best choice for this is the dealer.
