Recall: 2007099
FORD - 07S49
Date: Mar 27, 2007
Vehicles: 4,353

On certain trucks equipped with 6.4L diesel engines, excessive temperatures in the diesel particulate filter may cause a visible flame out the tailpipe. Excessively hot exhaust or flames emitting from the tailpipe, in the presence of combustible material, may result in a fire, or may result in personal injury if a person is in close proximity to the tailpipe. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the power-train control module.

Models Involved
2008 FORD F250
2008 FORD F350
2008 FORD F450
2008 FORD F550

Heard rumblings about this before the release.. Might not have been as fast as you think. Also low number due to manufacturer disputes so that could not help.

Ford isn't the only one having that problem. I've had two Cummins and a CAT put on a similar show. One started burning down the composite body shell that the after-treatments are close to.

What really tickles me is the 7.3 had pretty much been squared away "up to Fords minimum quality standard (IHC) " it was replaced with a real high quality 6 liter jewel, now the stupid consumers have to field test Fords engine to replace all engines . People mix up the difference between newer technology and quality.

Don't even get me started on the problems I had with two 6.0's. I really hope that the 6.4 is better (for Ford's sake), so I can go back to the truck style I really like. Until then I have to stay with Dodge or GM.

Ford better get Cummins or Cat on their speed dial.

I would love to see a Cummins in a Ford. I miss my Ford truck, but I sure don't miss the 6.0.

Whichever auto maker has the Cummins will have my business.

"Whichever auto maker has the Cummins will have my business."

That's what ended up driving my decision on what to get:

1. I want a larger vehicle.
2. If I get a larger vehicle it needs to be a diesel.
3. If I get a diesel it needs to be a Cummins.
4. So, I need to get a Dodge.

A truck with a high pressure common rail C7 CAT would be a nice package. The 6BT is a proven platform and a good performer, be nice if they wrapped that engine in a better truck. I have to admit tha Dodge really stepped up their trucks in the last year or two. I have a hard time going back to Dodge, we had a lot of problems with Dodges. It's never a good thing when your frame brakes in half right after your brake fire gets put out!

IIRC the new Navistar lineup is a joint venture with MAN, so it should be good stuff. The after-treatments are new to everyone and as I've said before there are others having after treatment problems. Ford just happens to be the most visible. I've seen problems with similar after-treatment systems for 5+ years. It's getting better though.

In my imaginary world, the perfect pickup truck would have a Cummins or Cat engine, Allison trans, and Ford chassis.

It's a comfy little world I live in; smoking cigars on the back porch sipping my Beam black label.
