PQIA tests seven more oils, 9/19

I am intrigued too ! And like you I like lower NOACK results has well. I got the Havoline Pro DS 10w30 because it was 9 instead of 13 in their 5w30. Also I got the Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 because of its low volatility as well. If this result is legitimate than its absolutely stupendous.

Why is Pennzoil conventional NOACK so low? Is it the base oil, additives, or what?

Yes it's the base oil.
Pennzoil is obviously using a 100% GTL base oil.
We found their YB 5W-20 had a very low Noack as well a while ago when we first speculated they must be using GTL base oils.

Since Shell is swimming in the stuff it's probably cheaper for them to use it to formulate their so-called conventional oil which is really a full synthetic.
PQIA Pres' Thomas Glenn wrote in his Lubes & Greases August column that "most if not all conventional 5W-20 and 5w30 engine oils in the market today are de facto synthetic blends ....contain 30 to 40 percent GP III."
I wonder if Shell is using GTL base oils in all Pennzoil conventional grade?

QS seems to be their lower quality tier oil.

Probably won't notice a difference in your car. Maybe your lawnmower though.

Yes sir. You are spot on with what Thomas Glenn stated about the conventional oil mixtures. This does make sense in regards to the lower NOACK results. And the Pennzoil 5w20 conventional result was 6.5 for its NOACK. So, in review it makes sense that the Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 could well be that low. But, wow. It's lower than the Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Strange in a way to me that the Pennzoil Conventional is lower than their synthetics.

4.4% vs 11.4!!

GTX isn't that stellar either at 11%.

-snip-

The last two really pushing up on the 15% limit.

They're dino, not synthetic. 11% is fine for a dino. There are full synthetic oils that have higher NOACKs!

"fine" yes, but Pennzoil Conventional's is particularly low, and that's what stands out. Compare it to this 10w30 they also tested:

http://www.pqiamerica.com/June 2014/tLifecycle10W-30.htm

With a NOACK of 12.3%.

Anything below 15% is "fine" but when looking at the numbers, one would generally inclined to lean toward the oils that are the furthest below that limit.

I'd consider ~11% good for any oil, and excellent for conventional.

I think we can put to rest the notion that the fantastic Noack numbers associated with pqia's samples of Pennzoil Conventional in the past were anomalies. This is becoming a consistent thing. Where Noack is concerned, Pennzoil Conventional is just on another level.

Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 is pretty much the same as Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 with it's TDS Noack spec' of 4.7% but has a slightly higher 150 VI, but those differences are just noise. So if you want a 10w30 (not me) just buy Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 and save some coin.

Well I liked the lower volatility of the 10w30 Pennzoil Platinum and the CCS of it too. The Pennzoil Platinum has a pour point of -48°F. So in my area this would be just fine when we get down to -4°F. Which we do once in awhile
Like in 2014. But I'd the Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 is exactly like the Platinum... Then yeah it would make sense to run this.
Also, as a side note I am glad to see you back posting on here. You really add a lot and are very smart too.

Yeah, I'm sure the average Walmart shopper goes to the PQIA site to check the NOACK before deciding between Pennzoil Conventional and Pennzoil Platinum. The vast vast vast majority of consumers have no idea what that even means.

You took the words right out of my mouth. The consumer sees synthetic and they 'know' its a better oil.

What's your opinions on Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 being of Dexos1 quality? Obviously, it doesn't carry that spec, strictly talking hypothetical opinions here..

Any answer made here would be strictly speculation.

Wrong viscosity for Dexos so its meaningless to even speculate.

That's quite true. The people who are most capable of choosing an approved oil (i.e. BITOGers) read the PQIA stuff the most, without actually being the ones who need to education.
