Under the composition section, the MSDS lists hydrotreated petroleum distillates 1.00-5.00%, zinc alkyl dithiophosphate 1.00-5.00%, with the remainder being polyolefins and additives. I could be mistaken, but this would seem to imply a base oil that is primarily PAO.
PAO, High quality Grp III or XHVI Grp III+, it's a good formula regardless.
This is only an MSDS description that is not meant for anything but Health, safety and environmental requirments and therefore the classifications can be left vague and trade secrets retained. The fire and health and safety and environmental impacts between these base oils are the same. I think the secrecy in the formyulations has more to do with maintaining steady supply chain through non disclosure. If a blender is getting a good price on a base oil and people like the oil and sales are good and they advertise the base oil they could place demand on the base oil from opther bleanders causing the price to go yup and availablity to go down. In the tight base oil market they have to protect their supply chain.

It depends what MSDS you look at. I've seen several that listed different ingredients.
Go here http://www.pennzoil.com/products/technical/msds.html and type in platinum, then view the MSDS's. They seem to have used the 0W-20 MSDS for most of the Quaker State Horsepower oils, and depending where you get the MSDS, all of the Pennzoil Platinum oils as well.

Both PAO and Group III base oils are hydrocarbons. However, PAO's are not "hydrotreated petroleum distillates". The term "hydrotreatment" generally refers to the various hydrocracking and hydroisomerization processes that produce Group III base oils.
