Recently replaced power steering pump in 1985 cadillac seville. Bled system etc road test initially fine but the first time I go on Highway and brake moderatley to exit the power steering fails back home on jackstands bleed again seems to be working fine road test around town for about 15 minutes seems to be okay back on highway when I apply moderate brakes to slow down from 60 mph or so the power steering quits again. Use the armstrong method to muscle her home. Six hours later start car power steering still not working will put her back up on jack stands tomorrow and see if bleeding will get it back again, I think it probably will. Any ideas on why braking from highway speeds would cause the power steering to quit?????????

The pump or steering rack is probably bad. Was the pump new, reman, or out of a wreck?
New pump purchased at napa, the mystery is what about the centrifical force of a firm brake application would cause a loss of power steering
Braking and steering systems are tied together on vehicles with hydro-boosted brakes. If you don't see the big pumpkin-shaped vacuum booster under the hood, then you have hydro-boosted brakes.
Diesel engine seville's of this era were hydro-boosted mine is gas so no not tied in to brakes....

Back in 1987 I bought a new 1988 Ford E-150. When I went to pick it up from the dealer I started it up drove a few feet and noticed the steering was very hard to turn. First thought was the truck didn't have PS, as it turns out the PS pump was bad. They took a pump from another new E-150 and installed it in mine, after about 2 blocks the steering went again! As it turns out, both pumps were bad. The odds are slim to none, but it happened.
Your issue is confusing for sure.
