I am replacing the steering gear on my 2006 GMC sierra 2500hd.
I bought one universal p/s filter from autozone, part #2210, goes on the return line.

4

with the hydroboost setup, the fluid circuit goes like this:
1) pump output under pressure to hydroboost unit on pressure hose.
2) one line from hydroboost unit under pressure to steering gear

a) steering gear has only two ports, the second port is 3/8 non-pressure return hose back to pump.
b) the hydroboost has 3 ports total, one pressure line in from pump, one pressure line out to steering gear. The third is a non-pressure 3/8 line back to the pump.

p/s filter typically goes on the return line from the steering gear (or rack) to the pump. And the directions that came with the filter even showed "with hydroboost" and show only one filter being installed between steering gear and pump. It even showed the return line from hydroboost to pump, and but did not say to have a filter there.

should i put a second filter on the return line from the hydroboost to the pump? filter is $10 and super easy to install. pros/cons ?
thanks.

The return from the steering gear should see more than enough volume to do the filtering. Adding a second filter that gets less flow isn't going to do much but add another connection that can decide to leak on you if it gets into a foul mood.

You can get high pressures on that system - it varies but the potential is there.
Your connections must be sturdy and well sealed.
I favor the return line in your system, but the filter can NOT be a flow impediment.
