Post Deleted

I've had a thread get deleted. And to be honest, I couldn't care less that it was deleted. The moderators are just doing their "job", nothing wrong with that.

However, I would have liked to be notified that it was deleted and given a brief explanation why. Even a 1 word explanation would have been fine. It's just common courtesy.

Another thing is that there is a functionality to send the poster a PM when something is being moved. It may not work properly when we put stuff into quarantine off the boards. Im not sure, and we should test this.

Update - I just moved two comments that were not constructive to the thread. One was fake obscenities, symbolic style (like in the comics), and one was advertising for another board because the poster has a problem with the rules of the site. Not helpful in this discussion.

But was the OP or others notified by PM? If the function is broken, that's something we have to look into...

I would bet that had-you copied those deleted posts and sent them to me, I could tell you why they no longer exist. But Helen & Staff should tell offenders the reason for the pull. They should send you a private email and the end of that email should contain a warning to never disclose the email contents to other members here. Any violation of that should result in a permanent banning.

Did you have your chest puffed out when you wrote this? I like how you state this like it's a fact or something. You don't know who we are or what we think.

I can't say if he was puffing his chest or not but, he's a moderator here, and does a good job of doing what he sees fit.

Let's see. You stated:

Have you forgotten the no R/S/P rule?

Unfortunately stuff that is/isn't PC often creates issues, and there are lots of folks that argue and take things too far. Unfortunately there is a P side to much of this stuff, but rules are the rules, and while not everything gets caught, we try to keep things neutral. Also note that there is a notify button, and we get a ton of emails each day from people voicing complaints about things being stated in a specific thread. As no team of moderators can read everything, some of this is self-policed by users. We then try to address the complaints in as rapid a manner as possible. This isn't your sandbox (or mine either), so follow the rules as the owner desires. You can be as un-PC as you like in real life, and see how it does for you in the real world. Here, it's not as much about forcing PC as it is with thousands of regular members, someone is always going to get upset about something, so we want to keep it to a minimum. How about "golden rule" as a more accurate depiction?

If a post or thread disappears, you can be certain it has violated one of the basic rules. Some threads can be cleaned up, others are just too far gone. Some threads and topics give good indication early that they will stir a hornets nest, so to speak. So get pulled because they are on the verge of excessively breaking one of the basic rules.

I looked at the deleted posts and could see why they were removed. Suffice it to say that the indication was that there was an argument brewing, and it looks like the first comment and rebuttals were removed all at once before going out of hand.

I feel that a lot of these threads and topics can be talked about in a benign way without dumping into R/S/P though they are a fine line from that. Unfortunately much of petroleum and energy is flanked in politics, and much of the world that relates to petroleum and energy is a religious mess. Add to that the politicking of science and stuff like climate change, and it's easy to get caught up. But remember the rules about R/S/P, as well as climate change and other related areas. It's best to avoid much of that and stick to a purely technical conversation.

Considering all i said was the word politically I didn't break a rule. I'm not discussing my opinion or certain news I just stated we have to be politically correct . If that's little phrase is breaking the rules then we are all in trouble.

I personally think you are one of the better mods but this attitude right here that you displayed is the biggest issue with the mods on this board. A lot of mods have this tone like they are lord of the forum and we will banish if we feel like .
I'm recommending this maybe you guys will listen. We are all interested in the same things sure we have little squabbles and sometimes posts need to be deleted and we all know that but a friendly hey this is why pm would put everyone at ease. When you guys run around like John Wayne deleting posts at will with nothing said sometimes we don't know why and other times it makes people upset. People would have more respect for a board if there is a little communication . "Hey your last post was deleted because it broke this rule" would help a lot. I'm not trying to be mean only offer my opinion to help the board as a whole. Mind you I only see our side I'm not a mod so I've never been in your shoes. Just my perspective from my vantage point.

And nowhere did I say you broke a rule, nor was your post removed. I made a general reply, starting with your comments since it was related to how you construe that one must act on the board. PC does not equal politics, so I recommend identifying the difference.

PC is also used with a negative connotation by many folks on here. It isnt as much a matter of PC as it is a matter of use of obscenity or making topics that violate the R/S/P rules.

I don't spend a lot of time here anymore because of the prevailing radical left leaning PC attitude and the thinner is better trolls.

I do need to wrap up a thread I started on my 04 below. Hopefully I don't get banned before then.

Thats the biggest challenge for the average poster here. How can someone understand and follow the rules when they are so erratically and arbitrarily enforced?

Can't help you with the thinner is better opinion, but if you saw the complaints coming across, there are a ton of folks who complain that the board is more right-leaning.

But left or right, that's the crux of the problem: Why is it even mentioned???? Right/left is part of the P violation, because political commentary and politically oriented comments from either side should not be injected. The board should be far more technical and auto oriented, and not even have a concept of a political angle.

Id say that more of the members are right-leaning, actually. But if we try to keep a balance, Im sure it always comes across as bad, cant please everyone, but we do try to keep it neutral.

Constructive and valuable criticism. As I mentioned before, there is a PM function that is (can be) used to alert when a thread or posts are moved. There MAY be an issue with it, in that the posts are going into a non-user stockpile. Your comments about wanting PMs is good, I dont know about the behaviors of others, but I personally dont care to be "John Wayne" in moderating, however if someone comes on, belittles the site, then belittles my comments and myself, and makes it clear that they dont like it/want to be here, then that's another story.

One other mode of moving posts does not have a PM function, but is faster, and Id assume that some mods use that because it is convenient, especially from a phone or other device. Unfortunately, messaging or leaving notice isnt always practical. Say there is an issue three pages back in a long thread. One cant easily post a reason for pulling stuff, and it be inline and at the right point, instead its at the end of the whole thread. We could delete out the comments of a post and make a mod edit, but then the contents are lost, which isnt always a good thing either. People dont always read PMs, and sometimes their boxes are full. There are many angles to this... But your commentary is welcome and appreciated.

I don't mind the moderation here. Got few of my posts deleted long time ago also without explanation, but I knew why they were deleted and even if I didn't, it would not bother me one bit. I guess I learned my lesson since nothing got removed since then.

People expecting explanations are a bit out of touch with reality. A board like BITOG would need an army of moderators just to write explanatory e-mails. To me mods don't have to be nice, write appologetic e-mails or try to please everyone because it's an impossible task.
