Anyone know if it's possible to buy a new car from a dealer in Canada and title it immediately in the US? I know with used it's relatively straight forward.

They will have to charge Canadian tax unless the car is exported...then no tax...not sure if the dealer will want to accommodate you???

Not I the car is North American made...German then yes

If it's not NHTSA approved then no, not for 25 years.

Mercedes-USA lobbied to cut out grey market imports back in the 80s because their European versions don't have the same profit margins.

This thread is of interest to me, too. I intend to buy Alfa Romeo Giulia when they start selling it in Canada before the US.

With NAFTA I don't see how they could prevent you from
buying it. The safety regulations are exactly the same as the USA.
There are a number of models they get in Canada that I prefer with some VW models (cloth seats in the Golf in the base model) that I would prefer and it would have me considering this move as well.

Why?

The car will be less expensive from a US dealer when it is available, and we are only talking about a 2 month delay, tops.

BC.

There are some minor little differences that could cause one grief. They're not huge, but they are there, although things are improving in that regard.

Unless it's a selectable digital only display, the speedometer will primarily read in kilometers per hour,
with a tiny hard-to-read-less-than-accurate MPH scale below.
If 2-5 MPH innacuracies make a difference in you local speed zones, this will be an issue.

A Canadian market car will have Daytime Running Lamps.

As well, all info & safety labels will be bilingual, french and english.

I'm looking at GTI and Golf R so there is also a large center digital speedo. DRL isn't a big deal and can be coded off easily if necessary.

The two biggest hurdles I've found will be warranty and financing. Import tax into teh US is only 2.5% even on a foreign made car. A lot of manufacturers warranties won't transfer across borders but seem to continue to be good in the country of origin. Since I'm moving to Detroit in the summer this isn't an issue since dealers in Windsor, ON are minutes away. One obviously will either have to pay cash or secure their own financing since VW Canada (or any other mfr) isn't going to finance a non-resident. I have to look into whether banks or credit unions will give loans for a purchase across the border, otherwise it will have to be some other type of credit line which may or may not make sense based on the rate.

I'm sure that if you buy your VW in Canada the warranty is valid in both the US AND Canada. It is reciprocal. Most other major manufacturers are the same.

Afaik it has to be 25 years old to import to the us you can thank Mercedes Benz for that. Although I do believe a Canadian citizen could "move" here and bring it with them and then sell it to you.

Yeah it can be done. The hang-up is proving conformity with US DoT regulations, and of course, paying the appropriate taxes. I know a few individuals who have done it (albeit with US-manufactured cars, where the Canadian regulations such as daytime running lights were a super-set of the US implementation).
