I'm looking at portable DVD players to take on road trips and such to help keep our 3 year old son entertained.

I'd like to keep the price to under $200 and it seems like you end up paying for screen size. Is there a decent unit with a decent 7-8" screen size that might fit our needs?

I'm not very knowledgeable about electronics and looking over specs and feature is about to give me a headache.

Thanks.

why not jsut buy a moderate notebook computer that plays DVDs? It's what we used for years to entertain our young'uns. They can also play games, do maps and whatever as they get older.

and you can use it when they sleep for solitaire, store your digital pics along the way, with a cassette adapter play billions of MP3 thru the car stereo, etc, etc etc...

but if you insist:

I got my son a Kawasaki portable dvd unit with an 8.2" screen. It came with all the important accesories and a few extra goodies for $165.00 from Target.

It's been a nice unit and the kids love it!

This is somewhat off-topic, but it may be worth noting. My wife and I were considering purchasing a portable DVD player last year for our kids. We were getting ready to go on a vacation with about a 4 1/2 hour car ride. At the time, the kids were 5 and (almost) 2 years old.

We ended up borrowing a DVD player from one of my wife's friends, who graciously offered it to us for the trip. Less than one hour into the trip, the two year old got sick. We had to pull over, dig out the suitcases from the trunk, clean her up and change her clothes. About twenty minutes after getting back on the road, the five year old also got sick. What a nightmare!

It might have been merely coincidence. I'm sure there are tens of thousands of people, including children, who watch movies in their cars without problems. However, if we do buy a DVD player for this year's vacation, I will be sure to let the kids get used to it closer to home this time.

I bought a 2 screen unit at Target for $270. Our daughter loves it. In an 8 hour trip she watched her favorite movie 5 times. The only time she said anything was when the movie was over and wanted it started again. Well worth the money. Any trip over 1 hr we hook it up for her (actualy it is for us).

Why is it that people insist on posting things that have nothing to do with a topic? If you don't have anything helpful to add why not keep your yap shut?

About three years ago before our two week road trip I bought a portable 9" AC/DC color TV with a built in VCR with the additional audio/video hookups that are located in the front (under $150). Since we travel with a small dog we just strapped the TV/VCR unit to the kennel and put it in our van (removed one of the middle captains chairs). Last year we bought one of those ultra small DVD players (can't remember the brand name but it was under $50 right after the huge after Christmas sale). Using a small power inverter I think we may have invested a total of $225 for our setup. Yes, it may be a bit bigger than most and a little more cumbersome, but we use it quite a bit.
