Can these 4 stroke outboards be stored in positions such as laying on their side for transport etc? Just not sure because of the sump.

I couldn't say, but I know that if I tip my lawnmower the wrong way, its clear that oil seeps somewhere because it takes a few pulls to start and then blows thick white smoke for a while.

Yep, My Suzuki actually has a sticker on the unit showing which side to lay up on it's side
