Also toads have toxin glands in their skin. The common ones in North America apparently just cause intense burning in the mouth, intense salivation, and a horrible taste. If swallowed, the toxins tend to trigger regurgitation but sickness and even death can occur if they don't regurgitate.

I hear that some south and central American toads have hallucinogenic properties, but I don't ever plan to test that theory.

Large and small dogs have been attacked some with terrible wounds.

What kind of raptors? Golden eagles are about the only raptor that will do any real harm to a large dog. They can even kill them. They are not common on the east coast but come by from time to time. Could it be coyotes?

The larger hawk breeds (which ARE indigenous to the east coast) can do some substantial damage.

Big hawks and huge owls. Both are real dangerous for dogs.
In Boston last year there was a guy was attacked downtown by a large hawk and got really messed up with those talons.
