Pontiac GTO

Would you guy's consider a GTO? My friend said they are really struggling to sell them and they are knocking off $6k off the sticker price. Plus GM financing is good. As you can see, I'm in the market for a domestic V8 with power. I want a break from the *** stuff right now. I like them, but need a change. They are aparently redoing the GTO already. A true duel exhaust out the tail end and some style changes are in the works. Typical GM not getting it right from the start.

My 02 SS making 399rwhp can get 27-31mpg on a highway trip and around 18-21 in town. When you think of how much power these motors deliver and still can hit high 20mpg figures I wouldn't call that bad gas mileage.

I wouldn't call that bad milage either. That's real close to what my SHO puts out - 'cept I'm only pushing ~220HP and way less displacement.

Buster, If I was in the market for a Domestic RWD V8 car that was somewhat luxurious and still had performance it would be a GTO. It's designed to be more user friendly than the Fbody it replaced and still not good enough to step on the Vette's toes. The interior is pretty awesome and the seats are very comfortable. To give you an idea it's a helluva lot better than a C5 interior. Exterior styling is up to you, everyone has their own likes and dislikes. Power is very good stock but the car is a 3600lbs 2 door. The LS1 is a wonderful motor with lotsa HP @ torque and resonds very well to minor modifications. They are proven reliable cars down under with very little problems. I would however wait until next year as the 06 is supposed to get a 385-390HP LS2 powerplant.

Uh, guys shop elsewhere if you want a US "domestic". I'm afraid the only domestic GM component on the GTO is the LS1 engine and drivetrain - the rest is all Oz

Well, "domestic" is such a load of crap these days that you should just buy what you like... GTO is pretty darn close to "old school muscle car" which would probably be a better term, well except that the GTO handles and stops as well as it goes...

Mike Simcoe, an Aussie and head of design at Holden and the father of the Monaro (and who apparently hated what Pontiac did to it as the GTO) has finally succumed to the pressure of Bob Lutz and is becomming Head of Design, GM US, after signing off on the next generation Commodore (Holdens full size, rear drive volume platform in Oz, the Middle East and South America, where they are badged as Chev
Luminas)

So it looks like that Chev and Pontiac might get some decent looking and packaged cars in the next three to five years.

Don't they also build LS1 engines in Australia?

Nope, the LS1 is assembled in St.Catharines Ontario. My cousin is an engine test engineer there. I am pretty sure they have never made the LS1 anywhere else. The block and heads were also cast in St.Catharines, at a different plant. My other cousin works in that plant (the other one's brother that is)

Ho hum styling. In their zeal to achieve "understated elegance", they made it virtually indistinguishable from all the other GM coupes and sedans. Nothing about this car says GOAT. I saw one on the road and thought it was the new Grand Prix until I got right next to it. It appears they did a wonderful job with the interior though. The seats look real comfy and the quality of the leather looked and felt superb (saw one at a local car show two weeks ago).

Like some others have said...knock at least five to seven grand off the price and it gets a lot better looking. For 24,000 you can buy a 2004 Mach 1 and still pocket 7-8 grand.

Still....if you're a rear drive, v8 muscle fan you gotta be thrilled with the way things seem to be heading. I'll at least give GM/Pontiac kudos for making the effort. I'm sure they will refine, tweak and improve the car both in visuals and price/performance ratio. Things are looking up thats for sure

Can anybody say sleeper? Looks like granny's pontiac and will blow your doors off... And it doesnt even need the **** -can muffler for that added .05 horsepower.

That to me is the epitome of a fast car. I loved having my old 4 door plymouth that would outrun a porsche 911--that was fun, having a yuppie nearly blow up his foreign hunk trying to keep up with my plain jane mopar!

All I can say is drive it. It put a bigger smile on my face than the SS, and that's saying a lot, course, if I had a 6 speed in the SS... It's a sleeper, and I for one don't mind that one bit. I hope that the follow on depresses the heck out of the 1st gen model and I can afford one later. For $33,500 it's a lot of car, and a much more practical and comfortable car than a Mustang. You can actually comfortably have 4 large adults in it. Heck, I can't get myself comfortable in a Mustang.

Now you know why Bob Lutz said "Holden is the jewel in the GM crown". We do know how to build good cars down here. Shame about the GTO's nose though styled by somebody in the U.S. The Fords are even better but Ford U.S seemds to be badly affected by the NIH syndrome unlike GM.

Yeah Chrysler is doing well these days. Their 300C is a favorite if mine, and if I had the money, I'd own one. That's a promise. Funny thing is, a year ago, if you told me Chrysler would release a big sedan that I'd fall in love with, I would have laughed in your face. That's how much I hate mopar crap. That's also how good the 300 is, if I'd consider EVER buying a Chrysler product.

Anyway, someone posted this:

About the mileage, I totally agree, but compare for example a 1988 Accord DX with a 2000 Accord DX - the 88 car was certainly decent, especially for it's time and it will beat the tar out of the 2000 in terms of economy

I looked up the mileage of some Accords for laughs. 88 Accord 5-speed shows two mileage ratings, one is 25/30 and the other is 27/34.
2000 Accord 5-speed was 23/30 or 25/31. 2004 Accord makes new efficiency leaps, with the biggest engine (and CAR) yet: 26/34.
Cars got bigger, much, MUCH faster, and still get as good or better mileage.

I work at a company that makes door lock rods and other steel rod parts that supply to chrysler,gm and also nissan and toyota. The mopar and GM plants have never rejected anything, but the Japanese are always sending parts back for rework or scrap out.I also believe this QS9000&QS14000 quality program is the biggest crock of siht there is,before a audit they just hide everything in a truck and park it out back and catch up on our paper work, and when the auditor comes in they take him out for lunch feed him beer and talk about nascar and send him home with a passing grade,WHAT CRAP north america will never catch the japanese in quality......keval85
