Ted, you should have used my wife's 850 Turbo Volvo as an example. She has a 50 mile/one way commute in the worst traffic in San Diego, on 15. I use the car to go Phoenix. I tried Mobil 1 0w-40, thinking, anything to improve gas mileage, but on two 100F+ temp trips to Phoenix, the combination of oil temp raise and oil pressure drop triggerd a switch that blocks the use of the A/C. It was two miserable trips in a black car. I dumped the Mobil 1 0w-40 and went back to Red Line 10w-40, next trip no problem. You can argue all the tech stuff you want, same trip, same car, same driver, you can keep 0w-40 oil, I like my A/C.

Larry, I would say the issue is with your engine, not with a specific oil, i.e., it just has different requirements. Heck, we've seen Ford 4.6L trucks pull boats/trailers in 100F Dallas heat with 2.6 HTHS 5w20s without any problems.
 
Do viscoelastic VII additives quiet the engine? Some people complain about noisy engines with synthetic 5w30 vs mineral 5w30. Maybe the viscosity modifiers cushion the engine parts.

I would call that GOOD polymer chemistry. They achieve the results they want with the tools at hand.

Any Group II+, 15w40 like Delo 400 will be more shear stable,give you significantly less valve train wear (and less oil consumption) than the M1/0w-40 - for about 1/3 the price.

They simply say in the first paragraph that due to the natural multigrade property of the POE basestock, they don't need to use any polymeric thickeners. The Mbil 1 0w-40 or any 5w-50 for that matter, will shear as TS said and are not the most desireable oils to use. They are definitely "one size" fits all lubes. The M1 shears about 2cSt's on avg, which isn't that bad. Amsoil thickens about 2cSt on average.

Ted, if you look at Mobil 1 10w30 it's about 10.5cSt @100C and uses PAO and no VII. Why is the HT/HS only 3.2?

Holy cow it must be good marketing then with good end results if you ask me. WE on BITOG are but a minority of the worldwide customers driving production after all. A certain 5w-50 synthetic is by far the biggest seller here (and probably worldwide)and nary a complaint!
And as for factory fills......

There are many 0w-40 oils available - they are sold by the most respected oil producers worldwide. They are not all made by EM!

Larry - I would think that your "issue" is engine technology driven. A synthetic 0w-40 is certainly recommended for your car
Some engines do lose OP (but NOT flow) at idle with some synthetics - it can be up to 1bar or so in some cases and is mostly inconsequential

Perhaps this thread has lost the plot a bit as it started off by Ted talking about rubber passing through steel rollers and things...............

Not in every engine out there. Swap out the 5w20 for Delo 400 15w40 in a new Honda, and start it up when it's near freezing temps and take for a little romp without waiting a half hour for the oil to warm up. Then tell me how superior it is.

Because the HTHS value isn't strictly determined by how much VII are in the base oil.

It actually says:

"The synthetic basestocks have a natural multigrade property, which means that large amounts of unstable polymeric thickeners are not required to manufacture our multigrades."

...not that none are used.

Actually we do speak a special version of English here with a Didgeridoo accent. We're getting better at it too, we can now understand one another.....I think!

Try salt water in your gene pool - it works wonders without any chemicals

I bet you've made a few women "glow" - as for Teddles........
