VW 1.8Turbo Engine oil Poll

The only two oils that I tried in my 1.8T were M1 0w-40 and GC. Out if these two, I liked GC better, but it may have just been placebo.

Why? PP 5w30 does great in those engines and it doesn't meet specs.

Is that a substitute for not knowing or having no experience and just wanting to type something, claiming the specs are the only way to go?

Another quality post.

Hands down, Mobil 1 0w40 Euro Formula. It's been in mine since day 1, performing flawlessly. If there is a better performing oil out there for this application, I'd like to know.

German Syntec 0w30 was Factory-Fill, so...

I can't believe I'm invoking Factory-Fill as relevant, but...

0w30 was factory fill on the Audi and VW 1.8Ts? That says a lot for it! The 150 HP through 225 HP flavors?

That's a page from my 2002 Audi manual. The outrage over mfg 10k changes is what originally drove me here to Bob's to research the issue on behalf of my Audi forum friends. In hindsight, AoA was wrong to spec 10k changes and a lot of harm came from it. Mfgs can be wrong, we've seen it over and over.

Many people here think base my statements on guesswork or some desire to sway the debate toward some pre-determined outcome.

I've been here a long time, I listen and I learn. When I make a statement, sure it's up for debate, but it's founded in a bit of research and rationality.

Bob's is the place to perfect the practice of rational thought. It's a shame a number of posters drag it down. A lot of old timers lament the rapid growth of the forum and some of the pitfalls that come with that. I'd like to see it turn the corner again, and the cries of "mfg spec oil only" muddies the water, imo.

I know not everyone who comes here is equipped to participate in the abstract combinations of technical and anecdotal inputs that are part of the forum. My schooling is History and Sociology of Science, so for me, Tribology is an ideal subject for discussion.

mfg specs lock the oil into a set formulation, but the oil technologies change rapidly. That's why we see lighter oils that work well because of new additive technology, and we see G-III oils that exceed expectations. So, I sometimes overreact to the spec-oil declarations like I did above, and I apologize for it.

0w30 isn't factory fill any more. It is a 5w40....probably Syntec. Also, my local VW dealer will be using Syntec 5w40 for the 10k, 20k and 30k oil changes.

2002 VW GTI

But does it matter? Aren't 1.8T engines from VW and Audi basically the same?

Here's a page from my manual.

Not really, the transverse engine in your Golf has a bigger oil pan and the exhaust isn't adjacent to the oil filter.

The high Magnesium additive pack in "Belgian" Syntec is pretty antiquated, and owes more to olde school diesel additive tech than the newer PCMO additives we see now. afaik, when oxydized, it becomes an abrasive mineral, Periclase.

There's too many excellent choices missing form the poll.

SynPower 5w-40

Rotella 5w-40

M1 Hi-Miles and TDT

AMSoil

Redline

etc.
