I'm starting to wonder how many filters is to many. If I put all the filters I'd like it would have a ps, coolant, trans and of course oil filters.

It does get a bit cumbersome if you put all the filters you want on your engine. I've held off on a PS filter ..but a Magnefine should fit well. Others get interesting in finding room.

Kinda reminds me of one of the great evolutions at my old job. We had lots of problems since we were blind to a number of things in the evaporators. We spent a lot of money on automation and various flow tubes to monitor the system. The original problems went away with all this great technology ..but we exchanged some of those problems with a career in keeping flow tubes replaced (maintaining the system that took care of the system).

So, now we don't worry about coolant, auto trans, PS, oil. Now we just worry about long term hose/clamp issues and figuring out the right time to change our filters.

..but it is fun building better mousetraps.

Just opened up my filter head I ordered from Fleet Filter (NAPA 4019 head) - it's also painted that same blue/green color. Maybe that's just the way they come from the factory?

Old thread but I'm going revive it a bit if possible. In another thread someone brought up why not use a fuel filter? I found this one below. I know it's 5/16 versus 3/8 but I put an inline wix filter 5/16 on one 3/8 line and it just took and little more tightening. Thoughts?

Just happened to look at the bottom on of the degas bottle on my 06 Ranger. Quite a bit of sand has collected down there. Was going to wait till spring.. think I'll get to it sooner.

wait, Im confused... it looks to me like a pressurized overflow bottle. Not unlike what would be found in most any european car from the last 20 years.

Seems to me that youre only filtering what expands and goes to the overflow bottle. However you describ ed above that there are three hoses, and that there IS there a dedicated input AND output from that plastic bottle.

But I dont get really where the flow goes to/from, and what the point is... You need a hose or two to fill and burp the radiator/system depending upon design, but flow through? Why? You want any hot flow to go to the radiator, not a plastic bottle, and any cold flow to go to the engine, controlled by the thermostat....

Id rather filter on the way to the heater core or similar... I think. Sure it only filters when the heat is on, but the heater core is the most trouble-prone item if something goes wrong.

The small hose on the top is the input hose, it has a constant flow regardless of temp. There is a 5/8 line on the bottom but a filter there or the heater hose really isn't any different than a filter on the small line... comes from the same place. I'm not sure where the thermostat is on the Ranger.

Finally got around to it. Put a universal fuel filter 3/8 from OReilly's in the same location as the green circle in this first pic. Similiar to this one:

Cost was $2-3. Drove about 600 miles this weekend with no problems. The plastic might be to thin to hold up to the heat. But I bought another just in case. G05 went from murky to clear... should changed it but didn't have time. Alot of black specs /white flakes getting caught.

I was hoping to see a bunch of sand showing up in the filter. Can't tell so far but with the color of G05 and how the filter is positioned might have to take it out. I've only had in it for 500 miles though.

Man that Motorguard is impressive! I would love to install one of those but im running out of room
