I drive an 02 Sentra with a 2.5. I was burning A LOT of oil. I've tried a few different kinds (even PP) of oil (5w30) and a couple different additives (Rislone, CD-2). Nothing was really helping with consumption at all.

A couple of weeks ago I switched from Kendall syn blend to GTX. At the same time I added 16 oz. of MMO. Well after that my car started smoking and I burned up 5 qts of GTX in a week.

So I changed the PCV valve and thought I would try GTX again. Just because I'm sick of burning up expensive oil. This time I thought I would try 10w30. It's been 4 days now and I haven't burned any oil at all. So what do you think finally did it???

The MMO? Switching from syn blend to conventional? Switching from 5w30 to 10w30? Changing the PCV? Or all of the above?

I've used MaxLife Full Synthetic in a previous car and I liked it a lot. I tried the syn blend version a while back and my Sentra burned it all up. I think that's when I tried the PP. Maybe I will try the MaxLife syn blend again.

The PCV valve didn't look that bad at all. My car was making some strange noises after I put in the MMO, maybe that was it working. It's still smoking a little.

I would say that the MMO freed up some sticky rings and valve guides. The PCV probably helped to keep the back pressure back to spec. the 10-30, if it was burning oil as bad as you say that probably had nothing to do with it, i would change the filter after a little just ot be safe if it did really free up some sludge

uhh......sentra 2.5L oil consumption is normal...you need a engine rebuild and a new exhaust manifold/converter.

the converter comes apart and the reversion of the engine sucks some of the converter [censored] into the cylinders and scratches them all up.

so a online search and you will find lots of info plus some TSB's from nissan about this issue.

so.....just put some thick [censored] oil in it and sell the car?

I forgot to say that it's High Mileage GTX. I wish I could find the GT-1 High Mileage syn blend. I think I'll change the filter soon and try MaxLife syn blend again. I have been looking at maybe getting a different car.

My bet is the MMO freed up sticking rings. I would not hesitate to run another MMO treatment in that engine. Problem now is you've changed too many variables at once, so you'll never be sure, but less oil used is less oil used so its all good.

Pinpointing exactly what reduced oil consumption at this point is impossible as you did all of the above at once, it could also be that the combination of new PCV, thicker oil and MMO just worked in your case.

Next time change one thing at a time and keep an eye on oil level.

Could that be? 5 quarts of oil passed through the intake manifold to the combustion chambers, and out in the form of blue smoke....Now if you're sure oil burning is improved, you should get a new set of NGK's.

MMO to the rescue!

Hey, we stayed in Apple Valley, MN this summer at Lebanon Hills park RV campground. Nice place! The MN zoo was outstanding! The Mall was BIG.

The QR25's are known oil burners. We changed a TON of them when I worked at a local Nissan Dealer here in NH. I saw all the long blocks that we ordered. (And road tested most of them) It seemed at one time we were doing 4 engines a week.
In that time I only saw 1 VQ35 in a new 350Z that had an oil consumption issue.

I think the MMO helped to unstick the rings.

You changed the PCV valve and noted a great improvement.
This is exactly what I would expect from a faulty PCV system.
Anybody's oil should be good right now.

All of the above is my answer to your question. GTX was a very good idea. Look how well it performs in the Amsoil comparsion listings.
