I just got a new-to-me 2006 Dodge Dakota Laramie TRX4 Offroad w/15k on it. I see at 15k I should be replacing the front and rear axle gear oil. The rear is an 8.25 chrysler corp. anti-spin rear end, not sure what the front is.

Very limited offroad stuff, light action at best. No towing to speak of.

I need 75-90 synthetic for the front and 75/140 synth for the rear with the friction modifier in it.

My choices seem to be, Mobil1, Royal Purple or Valvoline synpower. Both the RP and Valvoline seem to have the FM in it already. It is under warranty bumper to bumper to 8/80, so I'd really like to not have to fight them on any warranty work and I'm keeping all the purchase records of course.

Would any of these really hurt me? I can get redline but it is 18/qt special order at Advance. Ouch.

Thanks for your advice.

Consider Amsoil. If they recommend it, it will not affect the factory warranty and it comes with its own parts and labor warranty. Also costs less than $18/qt and delivered to your house. No friction modifier needed.

Which Dakota is it? 4.7L 8-cyl Engine code J (8th letter in VIN)
- 3.7L 6-cyl Engine code K
- 4.7L 8-cyl Engine code N

I would suggests the Royal Purple or Mobil 1 gear oils. You wouldn't have any reason to fear warranty issues, even if you went with Amsoil or Redline gear oils, which are the top two choices in my opinion.

I knew I left something out.. 3.7 v6.

Does the AMsoil price vary somewhat? I thought I saw somewhere something like 9 or 10 for the 90wt?

From the Amsoil site for your truck.

Differential, Front C205F.....GL-5
75W-90
Severe Gear 75W-90
Differential, Rear 8.25-9.25 Axles.....GL-5[2]
75W-140
Severe Gear 75W-140
SAE 80W-140 Synthetic Gear Lube
Differential, C205F Front..........3.6 pints[7]
Differential, with 9.25 ring gear Rear..........4.5 pints[8]
Differential, with 8.25 ring gear Rear..........4.2 pints[9]
7. Fill to level of fill plug.
8. Fill no higher then 5/8" below plug hole.
9. Fill no higher then 1/4" below plug hole.

So front and rear can both take the Amsoil 75W90 synthetic severe gear lube. Looks like a total of 4 quarts. Amsoil minimum suggested retail is $11.20 a quart. Some places ask more than this as it is the best product they offer, yet costs less than competive products on the shelf.

This product has a parts and labor warranty for 50,000 severe miles, 100,000 normal miles or longer if stated by vehicle manufacturer.

I see you mention earlier about not needing an FM with this, but I see they sell it separately? And that it says 'not needed for most' for the SVG.

The SVG is blended with the FM already added.

From the Amsoil site:
NOTE: AMSOIL Synthetic Gear Lubes do not require the use of this additive. However, not all differentials respond the same and if chatter is noticed, the addition of AMSOIL Slip-Lock will eliminate it. For chattering differentials not running AMSOIL Gear Lube, this product is an excellent solution to the problem.
