I'm new to all this however I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction to where you all get these group codes and nowak stuff and what it all means? I've tried looking and I can't find it, also I just bought a 2011 gti with a 2.0 tsi motor and was wondering if some people with the same motor will give me there imput on oil for our motors

On the main page there are articles you can review. You can get a gist of whats going on by reading the Oil Analysis section for terminology

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/engine-oil-analysis/

Group II+ and Group 3 are highly refined oils(group 3 being considered synthetic). Basically it comes down to a few things, as any oil that meets API SN/GF-5 and manufacturer specs will do fine in your engine so long as its the right weight, and changes at reasonable intervals. Others will chime in with more insight on the issue.

Group 1 and 2 are conventional. 3 is a hydrogen cracked conventional oil, still a "synthetic". Group 4 an 5 are PAO's and Esters and are synthetic. They each have odd and good properties, as far as viscosity versus temperature, high temp performance, and the ability to dissolve deposits.

NOACK is basically putting some oil at 150 degees celcius and determining how much burns off.

I really know little about your engine, sorry.

Look in your manual for the oil recommended. You must use the oil required for your warranty. There are not a whole lot so the field is narrowed for your vehicle so it makes it a little easier. NOACK volatility is a test and API requirement of percentage of oil evaporation allowed (15%max at 150C) Generally the higher quality base stock (oil) has a lower NOACK. Most good 10w30's have low volatility. Protects catalytic converters.

5w40 There, i helped.

Thank you all for the information, I know need a vw approved 502 oil being my car is new I don't want to void the warranty. I just didn't know what others were using in a 2.0 tsi motor, but thank you all for the input and any other info offered up I'd really appreciate it

I have a whole thread going on this subject already:
2.0t thread

There have been some other discussions in the past here as well if you run a search.

I have read that thread a couple times but found no extra info that I was looking for, also for some reason everytime I try to do a search it just tells me there are no matches.

Use the Google search bar at the top of the forum and just put in "tsi"

You'll get results that include a database of used oil analyses (UOAs) for that engine, and a couple other threads on oil selection for it.

The main oil-related concern on these direct injection engines is intake valve deposits, which are believe to be a result (at least in large part) of volatile components of the oil building up on the valves and valve stems when they're breathed in via the PCV system. That's why you'll see discussions about volatility, NOACK (a generic test to measure oil "burn off"), and oils' volatility when it has fuel dilution (unburned fuel present in the oil due to incomplete combustion).
