The "piston slap" termanology is thrown on just about every engine noise problem under the sun, That's why it's overdiagnosed. I'm sure some engines have clearance issues whether by defect or design that cause noise. You can't look at those piston slap websites and honestly say that there isn't quite a bit of "chicken littlism" in it.
For the record I've had engines that are loud, and never had a problem with them. My 3800s have very short piston skirts, but no noise. GM's 60degrees have always had a little noise to them, but IMO it's mostly top end. Iron Dukes had a distintive rattle, but last almost forever, who cares?
If your worried about resale value, then don't buy any car. Every day I hear people driving around with sqeualing brakes, belts and knocking engines, I'd say the majority of people don't really care.
