Son in Law needs to replace tires on his 2021 Hyundai Ionic Hybrid at 135K miles (P225/45R17).

Car is used in SE Michigan so need good snow/ice/wet traction and long wearing as he puts 35,000 miles per year on car.
Any thoughts on selecting the P7 tire or is there a better choice for this car within a similar or lower price range. The P7s have a TPC of 740/A/A with 70,000 mile warranty. The other consideration that I seem unable to find is the fuel economy factor of different tires. Being a Hybrid would not want to reduce his relative good fuel economy.

Pricing between Discount Tire and Sam's Club seem close (166 to 170 US $ per tire before mounting adds and discounts).

Other than speed rating and possible sidewall stiffness is there any difference to a 94V (believe this is original equipped rated tires) and a 94H.

Thanks for input and information.

You cant have everything. Pick some priorities.
Traction or MPG.

What tires does he have now? The mpg hit may be nonexistent depending on current tires.

I would pick reasonable driving traction in wet/snow/Ice first. Fuel economy is just an added feature that I do not see much available standard technical data. My experience is that vehicle manufacturers on most applications select a tire that is a compromise. This is a transportation only application and not a road rally car so no need for that end.

That said I grew up with rear whee drive cars and 2 WD pickups with bias ply tires in snow belt areas so almost any current tire selection is better than what I started driving with.

the second part of my post never posted (from phone)

The tire you picked is good choice and you would likely need to go all-weather to find anything considerably better in the winter.. although there a few options such as the continential lx25 which isnt available in that size
there are all weather options that meet your specs such as the

Falken Aklimate

V rated but not sure how much mpg loss would happen.

It is known that Switching to michelin CC2's lose upto 10% fuel economy for example depending on what tire you are coming from.

FWIW I use CC2 on my Kia with same economy

I like that they are asymmetrical so can be cross rotated to even out wear. 60k mile warranty and the Aramid sidewalls with pothole protection guarantee.

Interesting tire that I have not seen with aramid sidewall and pothole protection. My son has had to replace two tires due to pot hole damage resulting in sidewall damage.

Thanks for the post.

Would you rather replace tires, wheels or suspension?

The energy of hitting the pothole must go somewhere and if tire passes more into other components they may fail.

I installed that version on my daughters Civic years ago, never again. Very so- so performance, short lifespan and noisy after about 10K. There are much better choices.

What version of what brand?

My sister has the CC2's on her Rav4 Hybrid. She hasn't mentioned any thing about losing MPG. She has mentioned that hers are quiet and the better grip in wet and slush is very nice. My BIL said he will be putting them on his Tuareg next in place of the Pilot Sport AS 4 he has now.

I'd get Continental UC7's and ensure they were always inflated to the correct pressure. However, I my be biased because I only ever buy Conti tires.

The Pirelli tire in the subject thread. That 740AA rating is very suspect.

That version the AS 3 came out in November '21 and many dealers didn't have them yet using up old stock of others. I got my AS+2's in May '21. I'd need to get to my book for exact but I'm think I'm at about 40k on them with 5-6/32" left. I just checked depth when I put the snows on.

I don't know in snow but I have the P7 AS+2 on my Accord and they have been very good in dry/wet and wearing well. I bought them as also for noise factor which has been great. I put the Scorpion AS+2 on my daughter's CRV for same reasons.

I'll have see what replacement time brings for tests/ratings but the AS 3 would be on my short list for multiple vehicles at this point.

I personally wouldn't be looking at any all season versions if I was looking for something to get me through winter concerns in places that it snows. New testing from Tire Rack also but not with winter results. I'm not a Goodyear fan from my experiences but the GY WeatherReady 2 may be an option for many. Price and rebates help for a try.
