pints are a measurement too

I thought being on an oil site I would see that someone, at least once, has added a pint of oil to their crankcase. But all I see is 1/2 a quart every single time.

I don't know why this bugs me, but it shouldn't have to come to this.

KISS, its 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 not 2/8, 3/8, 4/8ths.

I don't know if I'm acting like a turd, but it is what it is. When my oil gets halfway on the dipstick I always say I'm going to add a pint, not a 1/2 quart or 1/8 gallon nonsense.

MATH, learn it, apply it

Or, move to metric and all of this 1/8 and 1/4 nonsense magically disappears. Sorry, couldn't resist.

In a way, I agree, though. Use convenient measures. If I add 100 mL of something, I technically am adding 0.1 L, but I don't say it that way, nor do I say its 0.0001 cubic metres.

I suppose half a quart (or half a litre) is handy, since we might be using bottles of that size. It's definitely more precise than saying I poured in half a bottle of oil.

Reminds me of Grant on Mythbusters. Isn't he an engineer? Seeing him use all those imperial measurements in his calculations must make his former professors tear their hair out.

Would you like a hint? lol. (j/k)

A pint is beer measurement; Oil doesn't come in pint bottles. Your request seems arbitrary.

I am unaware that you could buy automotive oil in pint containers (may exist but it would then be extremely rare). When someone is saying that they add 1/2 a quart it is usually implying they are adding half a bottle as well. Its just more descriptive of their actions.

My car takes nine .5 quarts. The year is two, zero, one, zero. Does it really matter...

But the phenomenon falls in line with much of the obsessive, overanalytical, speculative roundabout guesswork nature of things at BITOG. People don't come here to get facts. They come here to get opinions, like going to your doctor or to church. And you know what they say about opinions.

Its all meaningless when you're used to metric. I still have to convert much of what I read and post here from one system to the other using google's conversion tool.

Sometimes I get lazy and mix both into the same post, using quarts and km. I never think to use pints because my brain has been conditioned from childhood to think in terms of liters. One quart is close enough to 1L that I refer to fractions of the former same as fractions of the latter. So keeping my audience in mind, instead of posting half a liter, I'll say half a quart here. I doubt it'll ever occur to me to say a pint instead because I don't think of measurements in terms of imperial units.

I added 4 oz. a month ago, and it's down maybe another oz., so that's what, 1/6 pint, give or take a couple of oz? :P

In all seriousness, a quart bottle is divided into oz. Increments, if at all. Anything more or less than half a quart I denote in oz.

They are just talking in litres and won't admit it.A quart is very close to a litre - and we say an engine takes 4 1/2 litres,or top up with half a litre. It's obviously easier to think of oil in this way...so why not just use metric if you are using it anyway?

1/2 quart is used because oil is sold in quarts, not pints and it is the standard measurement for automotive fluid capacities in the US. When you see an oil capacity listing it doesn't say 1 gallon 2 quarts 1 pint, it says 4.625 quarts. Why not just measure it all in ounces?

Do you measure gas in less than gallons? Last fill up was 15 gallons, 3 quarts, 1 pint, 2/3 cup, 3 tablespoons, 2 teaspoons?

I have!(added pints or there about). I've even topped of with less, I just haven't mentioned it anywhere on this site or any other. Probable do it more that even I realize. Sure, I've gotten pickey about topping off when I didn't really have to.
Sometimes if I'm board, I'll go outside and check all of the vehicle and lawn equipment(tire pressure, fluids, interiors for supplies such as tissues, bottled water, wrapped snacks and such). Throw in 5-6oz of oil just because! :)

In the Grand Scheme of things this is so far down on my list of thing to be concerned about I'd have to dig a hole to find it.

If and when they ever start bottling oil in 16 oz. containers them I'll bring this to the forfront of things for me to concern myself with.

it goes to show how well we live in NA, when things that bug a person are as inane as a "pint", or "2010" issue.most of the world's people may/may not eat every day -- and this thread comes up.
charliej's post applies here.
it's time to get a life, guys, when you post things like this on a saturday night.
at any rate, thanks for my morning laugh, and have a good day.
jcwit put it well.

I have an oil measuring cup so I add in ounces and each car is different. Anywhere from 4 quarts 18 ounces to 22 onces to 26 ounces etc. The differences came from many oil changes noting how much it took after an overnight drain.

Also top off in ounces as I know each car and what the dipstick means in terms of how many ounces to bring it back up to full.

Yea, overkill

People like to ..or are at least compelled to ..put "a pint of MMO in the crankcase 500 miles before an oil change". None of them that I'm aware of add a 1/2 quart.

There you have it ..and from people who buy it by the gallon...
