I am replacing the pinion seal on a 98 Pontiac Trans Am. What to use on the splines in the yoke to keep it from leaking.
Book says to use a non- hardening sealer. But what ? Silly. cone or a pipe dope type ?

The seal for my truck came with the little tube of silicone

Some differentials call for RTV, Just about all modern designs have sealant on the Pinion Nut Flange so sealant is needed on the pinion splines.

GM decided against RTV long ago & started using a non-hardening sealant.

I've tore differentials down that have been together for months & see uncured RTV.

I used a non-hardening thread sealant (Permatex) on a '13 Express AWD recently. The factory stuff was white and looked like it (shrug).

All I can say is at ~500 mile check-up it wasn't leaking.....
