So I have been looking at cap and ball wheelguns and of course the two main companies making them are Pietta and Uberti. For those who are around blackpower reproductions, which one of the two is currently making the better product?

I am a black powder shooter and I think you will find either one just fine.
I have a Pietta 1851 Colt in 44 cal. It's probably a world better than the original and I'm at least confident it's safe to shoot.
You might want to look at upgrading internal parts and hand tuning your pistol. All the information you could possibly want is all on YouTube.

Oh yes, the steel and tolerances are light years ahead of the 19th century. I just wondered if the fit/finish or durability of one is ahead of the other. Not really looking to upgrade at it will be a casual shooter. Just want the best off the shelf pistol for the buck.
I have a Pietta '51 Navy and '60 Army and both function very well. Actions are reliable, finish of the steel components is good, but I've always had the impression Uberti was better and there is room for improvement in the grade of wood used in the grips, how they fit, etc. on my Piettas. I'd say both guns would give equal enjoyment to a shooter, but the Uberti will have fewer downfalls under the scrutiny of a discerning collector.

You'll find that shooting black powder will be a more involved experience. You'll get more into powder measurement, maybe casting bullets and making caps. Taking apart the guns may become necessary to clean them properly. All that stuff is part of the deal.

Oh I am very capable and willing to take them apart for maintenance. I just don't really see the need to modify them unless I am getting competitive (haven't done any of that in 10 years). I may plug 100 to 200 rounds a year downrange.

Pietta was preferred by a comp shooter I talked to before buying one for plinking a few years back. He contended that
Pietta had the smoother trigger and when I compared the two in a gun store, the Pietta was noticeably better. Either one, you won't go wrong.

When I was shopping for a Colt Single Action copy, I found the Ubertis overall nicer finished and nicer handling. That's what I bought. Not only does it shoot well, but the color case hardening on the frame is beautiful.
