Why is it that most pickup truck drivers never turn their headlights on at dawn or dusk? At least they DO NOT here in central KY. Must be a macho thing.

Just bugs me from a safety point of view. Rant off!

Dunno - had a full-size Ford total my T-Bird a few years back. Police said he didn't have his lights on, and it was well after dark and raining.

I see alot of vehieles out here (left coast) w/o lights at dawn, dusk, and when raining or foggy. Some people feel if they can see to drive then they can be seen - not true.

I am not sure on the headlight problem, but in Arkansas it is illegal to use your turn signal while driving. It has to be against the law here, because no one uses them.

People in Northern DE (I think its mainly the ones from the bordering areas of MD) try to be ghetto-like or something. I dont understand this odd bunch of people because theyre like half redneck and half wannabe ghetto (with the really baggy pants, fubu clothes, etc).
These people all drive without their lights on.

I have no issue with rednecks, no problems with ghetto-like folks, but these 'hybrid' folks are scary and very shady.

Try being a yard driver at a wal-mart warehouse like I am. I work until 2am. Most all the truck drivers come in and drive around the lot with their headlights off, as a courtesy (they think) to other drivers backing up trailers. Now that I said this, I'am sure a wreck will follow.

I drive with just my running lights on at dawn/dusk. Looks cool with just my cab lights and chicken lights. It's a fine line between truck driver and getto! j/k

Seriously though, being as I grew up out in sticks, I forget to turn my headlights on sometimes. If the running lights are already on and you pull out on a city street with lots of street lights it's really hard to notice if the head light are on. It erks me off too when you pull out infront of someone and your like where the h@ll did they come from, as you jump and spill your coffee. Some guys turn off their lights at traffic lights because you feel like an arse sitting there with your lights illuminated the guy infront of you so much so that you count the hairs on his head.

Why do they leave their lights on? I don't know. But maybe it's the same reason that BMW and Mercedes drivers don't signal, women drive fast in parking lots, asian drivers appearing not to have any driving skills (west coast anyway), teenagers sitting low and on the far right side of the drivers seat, and some senior folks blowing through red lights.
Some things JUST ARE!

Pardon me, But I do use my turn signals.

I also turn on my lights at dawn and dusk.

However I do realize i am not a typical "New" BMW driver as I have driven the cars for over 25 years.

Then, being that I drive a pickup, I must also be an anomoly, because I turn my lights on at the proper leagal times.

The reason folks don't use turn signals is conditioning.

When one uses signals 9 times out of 10 the person in the lane you are trying to get into will speed up trying to block your lane change.

It only takes a few times for one to learn not to use signals.

Road courtesy has diminished.

Who said anything about lane changes? How about if you're on a two-lane road and making a left turn, or a right turn, signalling so that the people behind you can slow down or prepare to stop?

As far as signalling while making lane changes, most of the people who do seem to think that turning on their blinker means "Please move over and make room for me; I am too incompetent to figure out how to change lanes without your help. Thanks."

EDIT: They also tend to be the type of people who are in the left lane and need to be in the right lane for an exit/turnoff in 300 feet.

EDIT2: And if they don't get over because nobody lets them in, they start going slower and slower because their exit/turnoff is getting closer. If nobody takes pity on the poor fool, they just stop in the middle of the road till someone lets them in.

I see it every single day.

No, I'm in the "I know how to make a lane change courteously" tribe. I rarely--if-ever--have problems making a lane change, and if I do it's not a big deal because I make them well in advance of where I need to be (that's called "planning ahead"). If I have to speed up to make a lane change, so be it--I'm not going to force others to slow down to accomodate me.

EDIT: Given that the law states that a person changing lanes must yield right-of-way to traffic already in a lane, the onus is on ME, the person making the lane change, to make the necessary adjusments to my speed to make the lane change. I do not and should not expect other drivers to slow down to accomodate my lane change. Nor should I cut in without leaving adequate space between me and the vehicles that soon will be in front of and behind me.

Usually I find that if I'm going slightly faster than the vehicle I'm going to move in front of, and there is adequate room between them and the vehicle in front of them, they will let me in, no problem.

I also don't "lane weave", which for some odd reason really increases the chances that you'll get blocked in...

It's the understanding of rules of the road such as right-of-way that have diminished.

Your misconception about what a turn signal is supposed to mean when changing lanes is proof of that.
