The contenders:
Pennzoil Ultra 5w-30
New Pennzoil Cleaning 10w-30 Conventional
Mobil 1 5w-30 EP
Mobil Clean 5000 5w-30
Any other suggestions?

WQith all your posting the past couple of days I'd say ultra would be your pick......OR PP

M1 HM actually includes a regimen for neglected cars.

Quote:

Note 1 -- If your engine has excessive sludge deposits due to less-than-adequate maintenance practices, Mobil 1 High Mileage can help by reducing the sludge left behind by conventional oils. For severe cases of sludge, short oil change intervals (3000 - 5000 miles) are recommended for the first 2-3 oil changes as reduction of the sludge takes place. In cases of engine damage that may have resulted from poor maintenance, even Mobil 1 cannot remedy years of neglect.

Or you can wait for the hoards of MMO advocates, unloading from buses right now....

What's wrong with wanting to talk to other posters? I've seen your name up quite a bit also. I don't have 1629 posts like you do. I'm a newbie and I'm trying to learn other peoples' views and advice. Sorry if you don't like it.

I'll give you my insite on the issue only because i've done the same thing you are doing, bought the kid a 2000 sunfire 2200 SFI I4 that had 10,000 mile dino runs under valve cover was bad should have took pics.

been on a diet of HM M1(11,000+) things are looking little better, next run is going to be 5w30HM from the 10w30HM thats in there now.

I just think your last postings answeres your question.

What is neglected what are you wanting to achieve. They will all clean, some clean better and your best bet is a couple of short runs. High milage oil is a good option, PP or PU is an option, MMO is an option and redline is a great option.

The best way to fix neglect is to not neglect any longer

What year is it and how many miles, Have you seen inside to even compare whatever you decide is truely helping?

I don't want any bad feelings between us. I'm just asking if you were me what would be your best oil for the application? It has 57,000 miles on it and I have all of those oils in my stash. That's why I'm having trouble picking one.

I would do 1 oil change with PYB and 1 MMO. Run it 3k and drain it. Repeat, Then switch to PP.

This is based on not knowing the current year and condition. You would have to decide if moving to a synthetic would be worth it for the vehicle. Only you can decide that.

Cut the filters open and see if your getting anything. Likely nothing will clean current varnish, but youll know if your getting sludge

Mobil clean 5000 and MMO would work well also or motorcraft syn blend and MMO. I wouldn't hesitate to use any of the 3

I agree with DT....I'd run a couple of shorter dino (or dino and MMO) runs before putting synthetic in it. It should clean up nicely.

What does the Marvel Mystery Oil do exactly? Is it a cleaner? A Lubricant? Both? I'm leaning towards your suggestion of Mobil Clean 5000. Sorry for the delay. Had to make a trip to WM. They were all out of the new Pennzoil 10w-30 YB 5-qt jugs(SN-G5)

I'm hoping to do three oil changes this weekend. :)

Valvoline SP in a daughter's '03 Civic that does 500 miles every week.
M1 in another daughter's '03 Pontiac Ecotec 2.2.
PU 5w30 in my '07 Grand Prix. Drove 10 miles today to a WM that had this on the shelf.

I would put the thinest oil in you have and check the filter every 1,000 miles if you can to see how the oil and filter are working. As you know, the filter is in the engine compatment and you can check it in you regular clothes in 5 minutes.

dont disturb the crud, you cant baby this engine at least that is what my friends would say...but i would go with ultra and tell us how it runs on it..i have a 2.2 ecotec and will use it soon myself
