The old van needs an oil change, so I’m debating using HPL EC30 with 4 quarts of RGT 5W-30 or a “cheap” 5W-30(ST or Kirkland). I have OE Toyota, Carquest 85348, ST ST3614 and an Orange can on hand. Which should I use in the name of science? The Fram and ST are the oldest.

Coincidentally I ordered 5 Carquests today in the same part number after I dumped all my Champ XLs. It was an easy decision after all the C&P's from @BrendanC Just enough for free shipping..

The problem with your arrangement (which is analogous to mine) is that you have to spend time stressing over the original purchase, then repeat it again when it is time to decide what to use. In my case, I used to buy Wix filters all the time, but they began to creep up in price until I started buying cheaper filters.... Ecogard and Fram, mostly. But this creates a hell of a conundrum when choosing which to use. I will have to decide next time among a Wix, some Frams, some Ecogards, Supertechs and whatever is on sale for less than $3.50 on Amazon over the next few months.

Toyota filters tend to have a high holding capacity, whereas the orange can probably has the lowest. If you expect a lot of cleaning to happen with the HPL EC, I'd use the Toyota filter, and I wouldn't be too concerned about changing it early.

My Express has HPL EC 30 & RGT 5W30 with oversize Purolator One filters (got on sale at Menards + rebate +11% Menards rebate (merch credit, which I used to buy them too). Going 1000 miles on each one, will cut them open & top off with EC 30 to gradually increase cleaning. Biggest thing is change the filter regularly before it can get clogged.

Use the Supertech first, Carquest next time, Toyota after that, and throw the orange can in the garbage.

CARQUEST PREMIUM hands down
