It's a car mod for a "look at me" intention. I guarantee those cans will never have gas in them.
They might think they actually have a prerunner there!

It's crazy what the average Subaru owner thinks their station wagon is capable of.

Didn't post the price of every item added to this car. There's a row of cool lights above the windshield and more at the lower corners of the windshield. I worked for a short time at a business that builds overlanding topper shells for trucks and was shocked at the price of those plastic gas jugs that people want mounted on their vehicle. They're a must have accessory to achieve a look. In the owner's defense there are stickers on the side of the roof rack that you get from state parks and such so the car has been on some trips. Just hard to imagine a car with a range easily over 350 miles needs reserve gas, you just can't overland that far without passing a gas station. This is the tacky car mod thread so what I judge as tacky you might not and for different reasons. Did you know those gas containers cost that much? Surprised? How is that a tacky car mod? From what you've posted, it seems that you're judging this person for how much money they've spent. Why else might you have posted the price of every item?
When I did a lot of off-road trips, regardless of how far I planned to go, I always carried extra fuel as well as many other backup and safety items. I like those gas jugs because they look to be thinner than a typical jerry can and I'm strongly in favor of minimizing one's footprint when running in rough country.Didn't post the price of every item added to this car. You bought equipment and used it for it's intended purpose. These are very likely for ornamentation like the Hi-Lift jack on every Jeep that's never been off the mount. When I did a lot of off-road trips, regardless of how far I planned to go, I always carried extra fuel as well as many other backup and safety items. Yeah, those cans are spendy, and I'd not buy them, but then I sometimes spend a lot more $$$ for some things than most others do, so I can't judge or criticize.
I also noticed that the valence on the front of the Suby is missing. Damaged from an off-road mishap? Removed to be replaced with a stronger bumper, or just removed for extra clearance? Who's to say? The takeaway I got was that this Suby owner does use the vehicle off the pavement.
Anyway, thanks for the reply and the info.
Seen just up the street visiting the lady with the lifted Crosstrek. Those Rotopax 2 gal gas cans are $85, a mount is $40, and no idea what the bracket that mounts to the rack goes for, and it's got 1 on each side. $300 minimum to carry 4 gallons of gas.

luckily no Honda or Acura were harmed in this making. Looks like someone raided and cleaned out the accessories aisle at AutoZone. LED's on the muffler tips too??
