photo problem (640x480)

I have taken some size 640x480 pics with my digi-camera, and it seems this resolution is not big enough to produce good quality prints at Walmart, or other online photo developing stores...(got pretty bad prints from Walmart at this size)

is there anything I can do to get good prints from this size? What can I do with photo editing software to remedy this?

The only way to get good quality images from that small file size (low resolution) is to make the image dimensions tiny. You could fit a bunch of stamp-size images on a 4x6." A low-res setting like 640x680 is suitable only for web use.

If you want photo-quality prints at a useable size (image dimensions), say 4x6" or 5x7," you need an image resolution (file size) that allows output of at least 300 dpi prints at the desired print dimensions.

In an emergency, if you must at any cost get better image quality in postproduction, you can use Genuine Fractals to res-up your images. While this software doesn't add real information to your image, it makes your image look smooth, it makes it resolution-less and scalable.

However at the very least you know now to set the camera at maximum resolution and buy the largest memory card you can afford (they are very cheap now).

I would set up your image program to make a canvas that is equal to 4x6... then paste in as many raw or as least compressed as possible duplicates of your image to fill up the space edge to edge both ways... I think that you will then get as best an image as you can.

This is why its worth the $$$ to have a few extra cards and leave your camera on the best settings.
