Phillips Trop Artic 5w-30 API SM

This oil uses a new type zinc . I do not think all the Conoco/Phillips oils are the exact same as has been rumored here . No TBN for this 96 cent per quart oil . It's on the Phillips website though .

There was a early SL formula of this brand oil with fairly low phos that actually did well in a engine I used it in . Then Phillips changed add pack suppliers and the second and last version of the SL 5w30 looked like this which in turn looked like the last SL Motorcraft .

The SM oils that are starting to roll in are disappointing. Might have to start hoarding some SL oils, or become a boutique oil guy. I think you said it best "Step aside SM".

Ive got several SM/GF-4 oils stocked up now. What's the cheapest way to get a VOA done? I want to find out how these new oils stack up additive wise, and I'm sure everybody else as well. I've got GTX HM 10w30, Pennzoil 5w30, Havoline 5w30, and Valvoline Maxlife 10w30 to test. Thanks. By the way Motorbike, what the **** do you do for a living? You are the MAN when it comes to oil.

These SM oils are looking very bad, IMO! Buster's VOA of Mobil 1 is looking just as weak.
I could be very wrong.......but I'll let you all find out for yourselves. I'm not running these SM oil until proven innocent.

No boron is in it but something they are using bumps the TBN . Something possibly akin to what's used in the Motorcraft , Mobil Blend and Amsoil 5w-40 I suspect . Amines come to mind

I beleive the zinc they are using kicks in at a lower temp than previous C14-16 dialkyl and with Conoco's Pure Performance Base Oils used in this oil it just shows they chose to go about meeting all the new specs in a different way in terms of add pack used vs other SM GF-4 oils with some group I and larger add packs .

If I could ask and obtain the answer to only one question about the major companies low cost dino's it would be ... who is the supplier of the add pack . I beleive this one comes from the Ethyl Corp .

No more than I know about this stuff one thing I feel certain about IMO is that some low cost oils merely meet spec , some exceed and are a premium product . Pennzoil was SL GF-3 King IMO hoping they still are these days . They used great base oils and a premium add pack and the price difference reflected it . So did analysis

Conoco/Phillips should fix all their new data sheets to reflect " not less than " when it comes to the HT/HS they have written down for their 30wts . IMO of course

When I worked for Phillips in the late 60's & 70's, they had a big time lube oil research facility in Bartlsville Ok. They were proud of their oil. Trop-Artic had the best shear stability of ANY multi-grade. They had the first 15w40 fleet oil, Super HD. The engineers at the research center told me Phillips had 2 or 3 "special" oil wells, low volume wells that produced exceedingly fine crude that they used exclusivly for lube oil. Conoco, on the other hand, sold the first pure synthetic that I know of, called "Polar Start". It came out in 1969 or 1970. Phillips also had synthetic lubricants which they had developed for jet aircraft. These turbine oils eliminated the need for oil heaters in the wing tanks.

In another thread, someone posted that Motorcraft oil is made by Conoco-Phillips.
