I was hoping to find a couple of people that use Petro-Canada products on here and ask them what their opinions and facts are for their automotive products. I have picked up the Synthetic Supreme 5W30 for a good price at a retailer in Oshawa, Ontario. From the tech data sheet, the oil looks impressive, great viscosity index, pour point, and cold cranking viscosity. I am going to put it in a 5.7L 1987 Pontiac Trans Am. Thanks,

Glen

Not many canadian members here lately?

I read up on the Petro Canada oil a while ago, and even the dino is AWESOME in cold weather. By far the best for cold starts Ive seen in a dino.

The synthetics are supposed to be as good or better for cold starts, and seem to be a solid oil overall, at a decent price.

Pricewise, Id only buy it in large jugs if possible. I priced out an oil change using the 1 litre containers and it was a bit expensive.

BTW, I'm from Peterborough!

I'm a poster from Ottawa, Ontario. I recently fininshed a 9k-mile run of 'Maximum' 5W-30 dino in my '02 Cavalier. Of all the oils I've used in this car (a lot), this oil had the lowest consumption by far - 1/2 liter in the 9k miles. It also stayed 'clean looking' (not scientific, I know) longer than other oils. I didn't use it during the winter, but on paper, PC oils have the LOWEST cranking and pumping numbers you will find of ANY conventional oil on the shelf.

Now, this may be misleading as right on their pages, PC states their base oils are a mix of group II and III oils, so this oil is most likely actually a blend in composition. Still an excellent oil, as all PC oils are. The 'pros' on here - Terry, Johnny, and others - have all said PC produces some of the best oils on the market.

One problem is the ARE somewhat hard to get, especially at 'reasonable' prices. If you buy in bulk, they are okay, but for small quantities, you have to go to a gas station and pay thier prices....

I'm in Ottawa too, and I just finished a run of the 5W-30 synthetic in the Miata. I ran it all season and it had just over 8000 km on it when I changed it out. I can't say exactly how it stood up as I didn't do a UOA, but the car seemed to like it, and it didn't burn a drop. The specs are excellent and though it is a bit pricey (Addy's advice to buy in bulk is good), I think it's a great product. I used the 5W-30 Maximum dino in the SpecV last winter, and it worked better in keeping a cold engine quiet than the GTX I had in there before. Both oils have great cold specs.

I switched to Kendall GT-1 Full Syn for no other reason than cost. If it's nearly as good as the P-C, I'll be happy.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I was able to get the Synthetic Supreme from a Petro-Canada retailer for $4.36/1L bottle which I thought was a good price. They seem to be proud of their refining process of their oils so I am glad to hear that their reputation is deserved.

Hey Addy,
I'm holding up well, but my wife is another story. I've been on the road the past few weeks and I'm back out to Calgary for a few days starting tomorrow, so no worries for me. My wife works downtown and she is terrified of the drive in tomorrow. I hope they solve it soon. How 'bout you?

That's a bloody excellent price for that oil. Good catch!

I am curious, did I see in here somewhere than Walmart syn oils are made by Petro Canada and sold in Wallyworld Tech 2000 syn bottles?

I usually see this oil T2000 syn oil at WW for about $22.00 per 4 litre jug.

sault ste. marie ontario. to get really nice cold properties, i mix 50:50 5w20 and 5w30. ST 5w20 has really nice cold properties, mix it with 5w30 synthetic and you're set. tomorrow is going to be mild, so it will be an ideal day for oil change. the final hot cSt is still about 9.4, so this will protect the engine nicely. the engine mainly needs protection from cold here, it will not rise about freezing for at least 3 months.
Subaru recommends a 5w30, but this is a NA engine, and my theory is that it will be extra happy with a FM (frankenmix) 5w25, especially given the natural very high quality shear stable 5w20, and using synthetic 5w30, which also should be highly shear stable.
