Permatex Ultra-Slick Lubricant as Thread Sealant.

I just acquired a tube of Ultra Slick Brake Lubricant and it has ceramic particles in a carrier of gel-like consistency. Hard to believe but it is actually rated for 2800^F.

Got me wondering if this would work well as a high temp thread sealant. After all a lot of pipe dopes are fine solids suspended in a carrier. I called the Permatex Tech Line but the Rep would only say that it was only designed as a brake lube and should therefore not be used as a thread sealant.

I have been wanting a high temp thread sealant for a long time and the highest temp rating I could find was 600^F. High temp thread sealants would come in useful if you had to make up a threaded pipe joint first and then had to solder or braze next to it.

I'm pulling this info out of my back end, so take it for what it's worth. A year or two ago I looked into brake lubricants for the "fun of it". I think it was at the Dow site (molykote) that I was looking at some tech sheets about high temp. lubricants and I noticed that with a lot of them, the carrier stock was only good up to a certain temp. (600F seems familiar). Above that, the carrier "burns off" more or less, leaving the solids as boundary lubrication (in this case, ceramic).

I suppose that could happen in your application also. Just a hunch on my part. Please check for yourself.

The Permatex product sounds like Ceramlube, also "good" to 2,800F.

The Permatex 59214 looks identical to Loctite 567 and I use the 567 extensively. It is my favourite thread sealant and it works very well. But it is only rated to 400^F, so you could not solder a plumbing copper fitting after you thread it on.

I conducted a quick test last night on the Ultra Slick. I put a bit of it into an aluminium can and heated the bottom of the can with a propane torch till the aluminium almost melted and the Ultra Slick seemed unaffected by the temperature. It did not thin out. So it seems to be able to withstand temperatures higher than 600F. It did char when I played the flame directly on the Ultra Slick.
 
I forgot to mention that the Permatex Rep assured me that the synthetic base carrier of the Ultra Slick was good to 2800^F. I asked him what kind of carrier could withstand 2800^F and he replied that that information was proprietary and, yes, the carrier would not melt or char at that temperature.
