Percentage of people that do their own vehicle maintenance at home.

Most people don't do their own maintenance for several reasons.

1. lack of time. Even some of my friends who used to DIY a lot of stuff simply can't anymore due to work schedules, young kids, etc.
2. lack of tools
3. modern cars are not as easy to work on

I cannot agree with these reasons.

1. Time is money. Find it. Paying $100 for an oil change one can perform at home for under 30 bucks is ludicrous. So folks have the time to drop off their vehicles and/or wait at a mechanic's shop? And they have time to sit on their butts and watch Netflix? I don't swallow it.

2. True at first, but tools are an investment accumulated over a man's life. If need be, forego the monthly streaming services and buy a wrench...

3. Probably more of an intimidation factor. Strip it all back and there's still a four-stroke engine under all the plastic. Get a factory service manual, check You Tube for some excellent how-to videos, and get your hands dirty. It's not that hard for most cars.

One of my main reasons for DIY is that I've seen so many incompetent people. Even those on the job for many years. I want my stuff to be perfect. (And I'm good at ignoring the mistakes I've made! It's a feature, not a bug!)

Bad times result in strong men.
Strong men result in easy times.
Easy times result in weak men.
Weak men result in bad times.

I think this is the best answer. The U.S is now full of beta-types who are neither capable nor interested in doing things for themselves. The whole "I can just pay for it" notion would horrify our forebears.

This extends to other tasks besides vehicle maintenance. In my neighborhood about 80% of residents use lawn care services (for pretty small lawns), order home-delivered fast food almost daily, and (quite recently) pay handymen to install their exterior Christmas decorations.

How lazy have we become? And the way people fritter their money away, is it really any wonder why most Americans can't write a thousand dollar check in the event of emergency?

You'll now excuse me...I have to finish installing the roof on my new patio I designed and built myself...

I hope you drive a car you built yourself from the ground up.

Sorry, you can be a hard core beta male and be a handyman and able to fix your own stuff.

I know lots.

I don’t work on my cars, I have zero interest.

A real man does what he wants to do, doesn’t care what others think of them and stick up for themselves.

I take my cars to the dealership, they do only what I tell them to do.

Sticking up for yourself makes you a man, not how handy you are.

I like flying jets, not working on cars.

You're taking things too literally. There are obviously exceptions to every rule -- but they're rare.

The dude with the man-bun holding an eight-dollar cup of latte waiting for AAA to change his flat tire is - to most - far from manly...no matter how much he "sticks up for himself."

Absolutely absurd comparison. I am, however, capable of performing every bit of maintenance and repair on most vehicles.

Not absurd, you just want a pat on the back for the things you can do.

I'll agree that some things, like Uber eats, can be laziness. Certain things like knowing how to change tires if one goes flat on a road trip a hundred miles away from civilization I'll also agree with on the aspect of safety. I won't agree or compare myself for things I know or will do that someone doesn't know means I'm a better person. I know and do the things I want to do because I want to, not because someone else thinks I should.

Cars have always been my hobby, from old VW Bugs to Pontiac Muscle to Vettes and even EVs.
My motto is, "He who dies with the most tools wins!" And I take care of them; note the last pic.

Being a real man has a lot more to do with what a person looks like, or how handy they are.

Captain Mark

No man bun.

With some exception like the stupid setup on the new GM truck transmissions I think many vehicles are just as easy as before. My Equinox is a breeze and my 3500HD is easy also. The Equinox even has a drain plug on the trans, 4.2qts for a spill and fill.

People today act like they invented being busy. I worked 2 jobs my entire adult life until I retired. On top of that I took care of the lawn, the cars, household repairs and handled all the banking as well as pitched in with stuff inside the house. I lived it, no one can tell me it cant be done.

Totally agree CaptW.
I been thinking its that "we can just pay for it if the monthly notes are...... or the heck with it lets just pay to lease it and go for a spin ASAP! could be some of the reason (besides material costs of course and GREED) the prices of new vehicles is outrageous.

Especially regular pick up trucks.... well if there is even anything considered a regular "human being use" truck any more , as opposed to all of the monster sized industrial designed ones flying up and down the highways. How/when did we get to $100,000 trucks!? And people acting like "what? well thats what they cost now so..........!
