penz or valvoline?

I have the 4f20e transmission in my villager. I do the occasional WoT and downshiting. I always used valvoline Dexron 3/mercon fluids.

But after this autorx flush im going to use MerconV. Both are the same price.

I never used nothing but valvoline but if penz is better ill use it. What is your experiance?

another question. Since merconV is backwards compadable to Dexron 3/mercon, can I use it in my 91 honda accord that I never put honda z1 in? I use Dexron 3/mercon.

They are both good fluids, if Valvoline has worked for you then stick with it IMO.

My personal preference is Valvoline I use it in anything I can.

Either brand will work fine in your applications. Mercon V is just an upgrade from DexIII/Mercon so you should be good there too. I have used both brands with no noticeable difference. Currently my Regal has Valvoline Dex 6 full syn, and it works well.

I saw it but it was a multi-vheicle type, I dont know why but I like to use car specific types

I think Valvoline will work fine for you, and way to sneak one past the censors....lol

it calls for Dexron 3 but atfz1 didnt come out till after. THen they said that atfZ1 is to be used. This transmission is a new rebuilt transmission, I have no idea what they put in it.

Im going to be using the Pennzoil. The valvoline at the one store that carries it has a very small supply, i need at least 14 quarts. They only have 4.

as for my honda, I looked in the back of the oil quart and it said DO NOT USE IN HONDA lol

An update.

I went with penz merconV. I did a full flush t-tec method and used about 13 quarts. My capacity was 9 quarts. The old fluid came out very watery.

But with this new fluid it shifts a little smoother but not really an improvment over my old fluid. It still has a harder shift from first to second. It wasnt like this before auto-rx.

maybe this fluid isnt good...?

To many variables here. New rebuilt transmission, Auto-Rx? Nothing wrong with the quality of the Pennzoil Mercon V, it's an excellent ATF.

Common to Nissans with that transmission is the somewhat abrubt 1-2 shift. It keeps the transmission together. Try disconnecting the battery for a couple hours. Might help it adapt to the newer fluid. A bottle of lubegard red will help the shift quality.

no origional trans, 135k. Shifted fine till the start of auto-rx

Tried doing the battery reset, no change. On ALLDATA it listed a TSB for my car where merconV was approved for my car. Penz on the bottle stated its compatible as well.

I was hoping for smoother shifts because people said MerconV was a better fluid.

btw all motor mounts are good and have been changed =)

today I also noticed 2nd to 3rd isnt really quick. and it has a hickup going into its gear.

ok guys Its been a while since I did my flush. It still seems to shift hard (slightly) from first to second. Is there any other fluid you guys recommend?

before I started auto-rx it shifted a bit better and was a little smoother. With auto rx it made it shift funny, and with this new fluid it shifts funky. Perhaps I should go back to Dexron III?

All motor mounts are good. I took ALL of them out today and inspected them and put a screw driver through them and gave it some leverage.

Any help is appreciated

It appears you problems (if there are problems) started with the ARX application. Might try flushing it again and I still maintain that the Pennzoil Mercon V is an excellent fluid. I have it in my Mercury and it shifts like new. Either Mercon V is the wrong application for your car or there is still residual ARX in there that needs to come out.
