Hey guys. So when PU first came out, it was slightly higher priced then PP. I was just at Autozone and noticed PP @ $7.99 and PU @ $7.49

Is PP considered top of the line Pennzoil?

I figured Ultra was... well, ULTRA!! Lol

That pricing seems a little off.

My understanding is that the Ultra is a different, superior formulation to the Platnum.

There is a Q&A on the BITOG formulation about it.

Ultra is the latest and greatest. Supposed to be a cut above Platinum on the whole, although there is at least one grade (5w-40) in which they are apparently the same.

I like ultra because of the low pour point, and the high amount of boron

Thats what i thought. I could have sworn i just seen it the other way around not too long ago.

If people want a cheaper option they should get PP.

I bet PU is out to compete with Castrol Edge and Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

To do that effectively SOPUS is going to have to guarantee it for extended drain intervals of 15K miles or one year.

They guarantee as much as Mobil 1 Extended Performance and EDGE when it comes to 15k mile OCIs

Castrol says this about EDGE: "Guaranteed extended drain interval protection for up to 15,000 miles, or one year, whichever comes first".

Mobil says this about EP: "Guaranteed performance and protection for up to 15,000 miles."

Where does Pennzoil make any statement about it being guaranteed for extended drains? Don't get me wrong, I really like the Pennzoil synthetics, but I don't think SOPUS has done very well marketing Ultra. If they want it to compete with EDGE and Mobil 1 Extended Performance, they at least need to make the same claim.

Look at question #2 in the Pennzoil Q&A. It all comes down to semantics and companies trying to cover for themselves in case customers try to go longer than the manufacturer OCIs during the warranty period.

You're a BITOGer now. We don't blindly follow what is printed on bottles, we look at used oil analysis and blindly follow those

Castrol EDGE claims to be a 15k oil but the used oil analysis seem don't seem to like that conclusion

Well just look at the names, we know "Platinum" is a level above gold and below diamond in value usually.

But the word "Ultra" denotes beyond or carrying to the furthest degree possible.

Hence, Ultra is Beyond Platinum and it cleans to the furthest degree more than Platinum!

So there you have it folks, PU is better than PP!!!!!

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I'm using it now! Read it and weep boys & girls!

I think these mileage claims are complete [censored] and it should be illegal for them to print that on the bottle unless the oil can indeed last 15k.

The way i see it, if it says 15k on the bottle, any joe should be able to run that up to 15k and have the UOA come back saying the oil is in good shape (or at the very least, border line at being completely used up)
I realize that they're sneaky as [censored] and the actual warranty states "Lube related failure"

From all the UOA i've seen on the popular brands with extended OCIs, they rarely last up to specified 15k intervals.

A lot of UOA show the additives almost gone @ 9-12k on average.

I'm sure that same oil can keep lubricating the engine up to 15k but it won't be cleaning all that well with all the additives GONE!

I'm going to make another thread on the subject since we've gotten waaay of base here.

Thanks for the clarification on PU vs PP. I'm still a little as to why PU is cheaper then PP at autozone. (no current discounts are going on)

I wouldn't buy either oil at $8/qt.

That is where Walmart comes into play.

$23/5 qt of PP
$28/5 qt of PU iirc.
