0w20 meets Ford WSS-M2C962-A1 so it shouldn't according to Pennzoil website
Unfortunately, only for the Pennzoil platinum not the Pennzoil platinum ultra. It does not meet the 962 A1 requirement because they don’t want to get it certified. There’s something funny going on about this because they’ve gotten every one of their other oils certified. Why not the ultra, unless the ultra actually will not qualify for the 962-A1 standard….. maybe coincidentally but the 962 – A1 standard appears to be associated with Dexos and while Pennzoil platinum is Dexos certified, the ultra is not, if you look at the front of the bottles.

I went to the Pennzoil website and selected the Ultra Platinum. If you click on the specifications, the 0w20 Ultra Platinum actually does meet the Ford WSS-M2C962-A1 spec. So both the Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w20 have that approval.
I also looked at the product data sheet and it shows that it meets the WSS-M2C972-A1, which I think is an error, but I could be wrong.

Apparently their website is in error. Yes on the Bottle it says 972–A1 there is no mention of 962- A1 and when I query the 972 it is not backward compatible and inclusive of the 962-A1. When I emailed Pennzoil Support to inquire they said that ultra was not certified for 962. Next time I go to the store I’ll take a look at the current Pennzoil ultra bottle. It’s possible that they decided to get it 962-A1 certified recently, even though they said they had no intention of doing so. I was pleased to see that the regular Pennzoil platinum (962-A1 certified) now has been upgraded from the old GFA6 standard to the new GFA7 standard, which has some better enhancements over the GFA6. Thanks for the information.

So the 971 is for 5w30 oil and apparently the 972 is for 0w20 oil which is what I use. But my manual says to use 962. And what’s crazy is when I look at a 1 quart bottle of the Pennzoil platinum 0W20 it says that it’s 962 specification but looking at the 5 quart jug of Pennzoil platinum 0W20 it says 972. What the heck!!!??? Shoot now I’m wondering if I’m gonna have to look for an entirely different brand of motor oil. Uhg!

According to this discussion -971 is the new spec for SQ/GF-7 and supersedes -961.

I'm not giving advice. I'm just saying that there is nothing that can stop an owner to use any oil he wants, if the only thing that would prove that is a receipt (piece of paper).
There are many other things that may go wrong than an oil which covers all requirements, but one.
Correct. Since I do my own oil changes, I always keep my receipts as proof for any warranty issues.

Right, nothing to do with the warranty.
Everyone knows that you have to follow the specs in your owners manual to honor your warranty. Check through your owners manual for anything that mentions #Warranty.

“It is your responsibility to make sure that all of the scheduled maintenance is performed and that the materials used meet
Ford engineering specifications. Failure to perform scheduled maintenance as specified in the Owner’s Manual will invalidate
warranty coverage on parts affected by the lack of maintenance. Make sure that receipts for completed maintenance work are
retained with the vehicle.” - from the owners manual.

Everyone knows this? The problem here is that all of those specs and the grade are recommendations, not requirements. The requirement for warranty is that you do not damage the engine with your choice.

And I have looked deep and hard through all my owner's manuals and warranty books. None say that oil grade or a specific license, specification nor even an approval is a condition of the warranty. None. If yours does then that's the first one anyone here has seen that does. We had a long and detailed thread on this a while back and no one provided such a statement.

Exactly! The text stands out in black and white. Do as we say or no go.

Obviously, you didn’t read the owners manual statement properly. ;)
