My friends son has a 99 corolla with 290,000 miles that sometimes had a slight piston slap. I heard it tonight and it sounded pretty quiet he used pennzoil 5w30 syn blend.. I always found that syn makes engines with piston slap louder...I was impressed... Does anyone have a used oil analysis on that oil it seems to be pretty good in his abused corolla.. Is that oil the same as the yellow bottle mixed with synthetic?

I would tell your friends son to add some liqui mmoly mos2 to his oil. It might allow it to run a little longer. And no the conventional oil and the synthetic are two totally different kinds of oil.

those corolla engines of that era 98-99 were bulletproof the new ones are not as good for sure. we very seldom saw the older ones here for a rebuild 2003 and up we see.

I have never seen a used oil analysis/VOA of it despite a lot of discussion on it here. If it has the same add pack as Pennzoil conventional but with the dexos 50% syn base I'd be all over the stuff.

But alas we do not know.

I have it in my 04 Accord right now. Maybe I'll pull a used oil analysis when it's time. Kinda curious myself. I have to say it certainly works in the Honda every bit as well as the Pennzoil conventional I had been running. It would almost be a VOA since my Honda hardly throws any wear metals at all!
