Pennzoil Platinum sufficient?

Car in sig, driven aggressively. 70/30 mix of highway/city driving, some extended idling times. I have been thinking of Redline 0w20 as it is basically a light 30wt and i found it on amazon for 9.95$/quart. Commute to work is about 18 miles mostly highway. Some short trips in between as well. Currently using Pennzoil Platinum 5w20, second run with this oil. I have had Redline in it before in the past but was not sure if the cost was justified. I like the added anti-wear additives in the Redline as well as the cleaning of the group V oil.

Filter is a PurolatorONE

Oil change interval is approx 6k miles, 15% oil life.

What do you guy think?

Pennzoil Platinum will be more than adequate for just about all the driving conditions your car will see over that oil change interval. I would use it with confidence. I have a fresh stash myself. Just did an oil change on the civic with Pennzoil Platinum SM 5w20 that I got on sale from Napa. Engine runs real smooth. Planning on following Honda's OLM on both cars when I use it.

Pennzoil Platinum + PurolatorONE = Almost no brainer for that oil change interval.

Redline is a waste of money with that oci. Pennzoil Platinum will work perfectly and is much cheaper.

I wasnt sure if the extra few tens of cP and viscosity of high 8s would be added insurance for the aggressive driving, aka frequent trips to redline.

I know its a different car but in mine i do 6000km with 100% city and extreme temps both ways. I drive the car hard and use all the rpm range and the wife drives slower. I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter and 5w30 pp and im super assured. My next jug ill use a wix.

Im doing a used oil analysis on thus change on next.

If you want something a bit heavier, use the Pennzoil Platinum in 5w30 version. Its one of the lightest 5w30 weight oils around. And still will probably shear a little over your oci , leaving you with a thick 20W in your engine. Also it has an HTHS rating of 3.0 vs 2.6 of the 5w20 version. That right there will give you the boost in high temp protection.

IMHO, Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 will do just fine unless you are planning on entering a 24 hr Le Mans style race with that car. But its your car, use what you want lol.

Lol I have a J32A1 , I know exactly what you mean. I have used 5w30 in my engine before and really couldnt tell a difference. Its more sensitive to filter than oil. Having said that , I dont like how the current castrol blend feels. Feels a bit harsh. W/e itll be out in about 6000 more miles.

But I still would say 5w20 is the way to go here.

Mainly because it will achieve operational temperature faster, provide better cooling and allow you to not feel guilty about hitting that Vtec down the road from your house ;-)

They are a good engine i just wanted to make sure she is protected as best she can with the abuse i give her haha. I ran castrol in this car before and wasnt impressed. It did seem to like redline, though. Was super smooth and quiet. No complaints about PP just making sure it was a good viable option for my driving habits.

I think that PP is more than adequate for this engine.
Remember that agressive street driving does not impose the demands on an oil that a track day does, and this is where Red Line shines.
It is not needed in this engine on the street.
If you want a light thirty grade oil, you could use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30.
You might also consider Ultra, which is a little thicker than PP grade for grade.
You could simply run PP for a couple of OCIs and do a used oil analysis.
This would show you how the oil is holding up.
It would be cheaper to shorten your intervals with PP than to go with Red Line, which does not stand out as a long drain oil anyway in any used oil analysis I've ever seen.

extended drain is not as important to me as engine protection, so i would not mind changing the RL out at the same interval. Was considering PU and may try it next time i'm at walmart, we shall see. The Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 is also an option i will consider.

Beware, PP destroys engines. Just look at what I found when I pulled my TSX's valve covers after 100k miles of PP usage...

Pennzoil Platinum 5w20...and...P1 filter...is more than sufficient...and the perfect combination for your type of driving. I'm using the same combination now...with 7500+/- OCI.

As another said....Redline is a waste of money for your OCI.

If your looking for a change, that is reasonably priced (under $5 a qt.)....you might consider Mobil 1 5w20.. OR.. 0w20. You might also extend your OCI to 7K.

Mobil 1 0w20 will be my next change.

Worry more about your timing belt , motor mounts and transmission. If you use PP , oil will be the least of your maintainence worries. Rockauto has great kits for sale, I recommend the Aisin Kit , has the exact same belt that comes OEM as well as OE bearings , tensioner and water pump. And some Gatorback belts too , for the P/s + Alternator belts since they have to come off anyways. And valve adjustments ........

Just posted a used oil analysis on Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 on our Fiesta with nearly 12K on it, with great results. We drive this thing pretty hard, don't really know any other way to drive a car with 120 HP, haha! IMHO, it's surely fine in any application where it meets manufacturer recommendations and the engine hasn't been modded to significantly make more power than as manufactured.

+1 on the Aisin kit. I used one for my mother's highlander. The components in it were the exact ones I was pulling off. Mitsuboshi belt, Koyo bearings, Aisin waterpump. They just didn't have the Toyota stamp on them.

Someone needs to teach you a lesson in proper automotive maintenance. You are obviously neglecting that poor Acura.
