Pennzoil Platinum Jug Failures *pics*

I was doing some searching and it appears that HDPE plastic is a fairly easy to recycle product. I wonder if previous grades of plastic used to bottle oil was more robust.. I seem to remember that at least 5 years or more ago they were using a higher number plastic in those oil bottles. Anyone has a stash of bottles that are older than 5 years old, which plastic did they use?

They either got super cheap with the jugs or this is just a bad run of them. I have well over 100 qts of all types of oils stored in the loft of my shed. They see anywhere from 20F to 110F and i have yet to have any of them leak over the years. I think my older stuff is from 04. Out of all the jugs i have though the new pennzoil jugs do seem fairly flimsy. Sorry to hear about your leak. Man if mine leaked i would have a heck of a mess.

No idea. The jugs have the HDPE 2 recycle symbol, but I think that just means that it's recyclable -- nothing saying contains XX% post consumer content.

People shouldn't have to worry about storing their oil bottles in a climatic
controlled environment unless they're living up in Fairbanks Alaska...

Just bought two of the 5qt jugs of PP last month. Going to be almost a year before I use them. Could not pass them up at 18.88 a jug. Now you got me worried. Guess I will be taking a look at them at least a couple of times a week.

Bud, if your jugs say "29APR10", be afraid, be very afraid. Probably not much a worry for oil bought last month. It's probably a bad run of plastic jugs and/or my storage environment. A plastic tub, as a precaution, can't hurt though -- might even save your life, if you're married.

If this is a more widespread problem, I'm sure we'll catch the BITOG buzz. So far, seems isolated. (Anyone else with the same problem, at any stage of it, jump in here and add some pics)

OT: Gotta ask, though, where'd you get PP for $18.88 last month?
