PCV change interval

The PCV is not a simple check valve. It is typically a variable flow valve as well. PCV problems are typically involve plugging due to long oil change intervals. It can also plug due to short trips and condensation in cold weather. Once it plugs the sludge problems can accelerate.

Some vehicles have more complex PCV/oil separator systems where failure results in excessive oil consumption.

I recommend checking the PCV at least once a year and changing it every few years or when you change spark plugs. Even if it is not plugged doesn't mean it is functioning like new.

Right mva.

I change them every 25-30k in all my vehicles and usually notice a difference in how they rattle. No sludged up engines here.

I was thinking that I'd try to clean mine on the car. The valve is hard to change and would probably involve removing the intake. I can get to the hose, so I was thinking that I'd pour about a cup of kerosene down the hose while I was doing an oil change and let it run though. Anybody try such a thing?

if I could get the valve unwelded from it's plastic/rubber grommet on the 5.3, I'd love to take a look at it. So far, nothing including needle nose vice grips and PB blaster has been able to dislodge it from its setting. (if I break the grommet its a dealer part-so now way that is going to happen)
