Passat: Great Mileage

We just returned in our 2019 VW Passat from Dewey Beach, DE to central PA, a distance of 324 miles using the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, I-97, 110, I-70 and I-99 to get home. We averaged about 65 mph, hitting 75+ on a lot of the interstate systems. In addition, we had three people in the car.....my wife, myself and our 9 year old grandson. The trunk was stuffed full and we gained about 1150 in altitude between the sea and where we live. Here are the figure fpor that:

Gasoline purchased on arrival at home: 7.631 gallons
Miles traveled: 324

MILEAGE ON TRIP HOME: 42.45 mpg

I am extremely pleased with this vehicle. In early 2020 before Covid, we went from Central PA to St. Augustine FL and averaged essentially the same mileage on the trip. The Budack engine really seems to suck a lot of energy out of the fuel.

pretty darn good. must've been in the lowest rpm of the gear. i always put the cruise control as soon as it shifts and goes into overdrive.

At 70, the rpm gauge is dead on 2000. They way the engine works to extract heat is quite interesting. You can Google it.

VW underrates the estimated fuel economy so they don't face a lawsuit. Most auto makers have been hit by frivolous lawsuits in the past.
We live in a litigious society.
My wifes Corolla does 1600 RPM at 74 MPH unless more power is needed.

MY '15 TDI Golf will get near 60 MPG all day long in the summer at 65 MPH. Not so much at 80 MPH or when it's 10F on winter blend fuel and snow tires. That 42 on a gasoline rig is great!

Did 415 miles yesterday in the Elantra and went through a little less than 2/3 a tank of fuel. Calculated it out to be around 43 mpg. Not bad for doing 75-80 mph much of the way.

my 2013 2.5 five cylinder passat’s best highway mpg has been 38mpg at 72mph. i like this n.a. engine alot, never understood the automotive newsmedia’s hate.

It's also been my experience VW shoots low on their estimated mpg. My NA VR6 returns a full 4 mpg higher than what it was rated on the sticker (hand calculated). The Passat is surprisingly aerodynamic I'm sure that helps.

On my 300 mile round trips to the FT. Myers area, my (now traded-in) Passat would get 41mpg easy as well. It really is very efficient.

On our recent trip to AZ, the Tucson averaged 38mpg and it doesn't have a turbo. Still very good but not like the VW.
