i am planning to revamp my home network with a patch panel and switch. i will need to make a bunch of cables. in the past i have made them with the old style rj45 and even though they work well most of the time, i always have a few mistakes . i have the crimp tool and a few plugs left .

i was thinking of getting the new style pass through style plugs and crimper. are they so much better that its worth it to buy ?

The closed end ones are what professionals use. Since you have some mastery of those keep using them. Nothing of course will prevent you from putting the wires in the wrong order. Inspect that the wires are in the correct order and go all the way to the end before crimping. Push on the wire to keep it all the way in the plug while crimping.

Don't bother field making up 1 or 2 foot patch cables, they're cheaper to just buy.
