From my perspective, Taiwan is more similar to Japan than China from a manufacturing quality and economic similarity standpoint. The quality of stuff we get out of Taiwan has long been better, on average, than the stuff coming out of mainland China.

I still prefer buying U.S.A-made whenever possible but when that is unavailable, Taiwan>China.

This, all this.

I've had to point this out several times on forums. A lot of people are confused on the People's Republic of China vs. Taiwan.

I don't see the point in a "preventative" water pump replacement as the asin water pumps on all my Toyotas are original, and not a single one has ever leaked, I have rebuilt 60+ and have worked on even more Toyotas then that, I would think the Honda would be similar in water pump quality, at least my hondas were.

My experience is limited to these cars though.

I had a made in China Cardone water pump that was on for about 20,000 miles. The seal was great but the bearing started making a roaring noise under acceleration.

My Honda OEM axles developed a feeling as though my wheels were going to fall off so I put on O'reilly auto new made in China axles. I developed a vibration and thought I would switch brands. I installed Cardone new axles and I had a vibration at a different speed. I then installed remanufactured Honda axles and all problems are gone.

I've had motor mounts made in Taiwan (a republic of China) from Beck/Arnley and they tore in less than 10,000 miles. Replaced with OEM Honda and the mounts have over 30,000 miles on them and look great.

I will say that the ignition switch from O'reilly Auto called Import Direct is made in Taiwan is holding up well. I've had the switch for about 2 years with no problems.

I also have a blower motor resistor (Duralast) from Autozone that is made in Taiwan which has worked well for the past 5 years.

Sorry, but I must also rant about India. I had strut mounts, Moog and Kyb, that were made in India and both of them had rubber pieces flake off them; in addition, they developed a ringing noise going over bumps that took me a long time to troubleshoot. I replaced them with OEM Honda mounts and bearings and the noise is gone.

You opt for garbage and you get garbage, period.

Q.

I've always been the guy who cheers for the underdog and try to avoid the dealer like the plague. My friends who work at dealers always tell me that you can't beat OEM parts. I'm finally starting to listen to them at my old age. You can teach an old dog new tricks, and this dog is a very slow learner.

Indeed Taiwan (Republic of China) and China (Peoples Republic of China) is about like comparing East to West Germany in the 80's. East Germany gave us the Trabant while West Germany gave us the BMW M3.

Now the PRC (Red China) can make some good stuff....when they want/have to. But that is the kicker. It is essentially like playing quality control Russian roulette.

I feel like parts stores are letting a lot of people down with junk aftermarket products.

It's a race to the bottom.

Whenever I see that parts store car driving around delivering parts I can't help thinking that somebody out there is getting screwed.

I only buy Chinese made parts for my vehicles as "A LAST RESORT". I don't buy parts at O'Reilly, Autozone or Napa anymore. Chances are those parts you buy there are Made in China. I now buy on Ebay, the New Old Stock (NOS) ones I have bought on Ebay were Made in Japan or USA and are even cheaper than Autozone, O'Reilly or Napa. Hey, it is even TAX FREE & most of the time FREE SHIPPING

TIP: When buying on EBAY read on the DESCRIPTION OF PARTS & COUNTRY OF ORIGIN

It means the part is new in the box, but old. Like getting a new in the box tail light lens for a 67 Buick.

No kidding. The OE pump on my Dakota went 19 years and 160,000+ miles.

The demise of NAPA is sad. They used to claim that many of their parts were better than OEM.

The biggest problem with the Mexican and Chinese parts is the inconsistency in quality. You may get something good, or you may not. I have some experience with this, as I used to work as a contractor at Valeo in Rochester, NY. They made good quality parts. Then they got the bright idea of sending the production to Mexico. They went from staff who had 20-30 years experience to basically nothing.
