The other thing people forget about paper is that if it takes water, it is finished. I've seen clean intake tracts on healthy engines that had the entire air filter caked in mud. Smaller splashes are almost completely deflected by oiled foam.
This also why paper filters are completely unwashable. Ride a dirty course? You might have to go to the dealer and buy a paper filter for every ride. Here in FL, we ride sugar sand or mud. Not much else in between. Paper filter? No thanks. I'd rather wash than replace.
