paper shredder lubrication

Hi,

I bought a fellowes personal 7-page confetti shredder this weekend, so that I can do more to protect myself, besides just ripping stuff up into small squares...

We have a big shreadere at work, and the label says to lubircate it with 10w30 engine oil at specific intervals, explained based upon use.

THis one says that it needs to be oiled regularly as well... but it states to:

Firstly... wat would really be the best lubricant for a paper shredder? ND30 oil? ATF?

Second: WHy do they make those reccomendations? Fire hazzard? The possibility of your oil-soaked paper starting on fire, causing you to sue fellowes for starting a fire?

ANy ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Don'no. I have a Boston shredder I got for $10 at a garage sale. It is heavy duty and has it's own metal stand built in. I give it a shot of CRC Power Lube every now and then. Power Lube is safe for most plastics. If you really want to be safe I suppose use what they say to use, but if you look at the CRC website, they have a multitude of lubricants, but where to buy most of them?

Sorry to hi-jack this thread John, but how's your Saab 9-3 doing?

I'm getting terribly bored with the 97 Escort my GF and I are sharing and want somethign a little more "fun" and comfy on long road trips.

we have some "mil-spec" shredder oil for the strip shredder at work. i will see what it is. the shredder is a bit of an antique (label says it can shred an 8" floppy) so it may not be very relevant to a "modern" shredder. it is y2k ready though -- it will shred a cd.

It is doing great! It is VERY enjoable to drive, and I really have liked the car a LOT so far. I just crossed 14k in it.

I took it ona 300 mile each way road trip for thanksgiving, and it did really well. It sipped gas to the tune of 34 MPG going down, 36MPG coming back, though fully loaded and traveling on the US Highway instead of interstate... so there were stoplights factored in.

As I understand there is a very weak secondary market for saab cars... No big deal to me, as I buy my vehicles and then keep them. But this means that you might be able to find a very good deal! Look for the 'linear' 175hp low inertia turbo version. It is labeled '2.0t'. Get it with MT and youll have an excellent car that is very enjoyable.

That was exactly the type of info I was looking for... I wonder why the DoD shredder at work has a label on it from the manufacturer that says to use 10w30 oil?

Of course, a good bite of skin would probably include a reasonably significant amount of slippery fat, thus providing some lubrication. Naturally, if it gets a hold of any bone-containing appendages, any lubrication advantages will probably be outweighed by the physical damage involved. . .

Seriously, just go to Office Depot, Office Max, etc. They all carry various size bottles of oils made for just this purpose. In the military, we have some pretty heavy duty shredders that have jug-fed automatic oiling systems. Pretty interesting to examine how they work.

Incredibly enough, use just what it says. Wesson oil is fine. Petroleum byproducts and paper dust just make an abrasive grit that dulls the blades. I've been dealing with paper products for over 25 years, in case you are wondering about credentials.

I dunno about a home shredder, but when I was in the military, we just sprayed ours with silicone lubricant.
