My metal garage door needs painted. The original finish is starting to deteriorate. I'm going to paint it white but which white?
Gloss, satin or whatever, I'm not sure what will look best. Also, any favorite paint brands for something like this.
Oh yeah, I don't like painting.

SW Duration in satin. Grab some samples to match up to your current paint if you are happy with it.

I also have to paint my wood garage door, probably scrap and prime with Zinsser primer and use Pittsburg paramount flat house paint, yeah its old 1950 ish with now windows, but still works after a few adjustments.

How is it deteriorating? Is it peeling or chalking?..... Or both. If it's peeling you can pressure wash it, if you have access to a high pressure washer. (3,500 PSI+).

If not you can rent one, or else hire it out fairly reasonably. (Get ready to clean up paint chips from all over your driveway). I had mine painted a semi gloss white. This was back at my other house.

My current doors were installed new. (They come in white). I had them painted in semi gloss, chocolate brown to match the trim. They're exposed to the full afternoon Sun, and are going on 4 years now, and still look good. With zero cracks or peeling.

I would go with satin finish.

I second Sherwin Williams Duration. I painted two large steel pole buildings (the usual dull yellow ) a few years back and the results were very good.

Good preparation is just as important as the paint used and don't paint in the sun..

Remember, the Sun will make any paint flat. Regardless if you want it or not. The darker the color, the faster it will go from gloss to flat. Because the more heat and UV light it will absorb.

I do not recommend Sherwin Williams white color named Extra White. It’s a bit too much on the cool side. PPG’s color Delicate White is balanced perfectly. Buy PPG at a company POG paint store , not a Home Depot. They use the better colorants instead of the universal ones.
