Daughters Telluride got a P0597. It sounds to me that they changed from your normal kind of thermostat to some kind of electrically controlled thermostat that has broken.
First step would be to clear the code to see if it comes back. If it does come back check the wiring at the thermostat. Also, check with the dealer to see if the thermostat is under some sort of extended warranty.
It isn't just Kia. Mazda switched to what they call a 'coolant control valve.' From a quick Google search, it seems Tellurides (and probably Pallisades) use something similar.
