Oversized Mobil1 M108

You have to do some research. With some looking around I discovered that I could use for my V8 4Runner, the longer M1-209 in place of the shorter M1-102 with the same bypass setting. More media, a tiny bit more oil for the same price. What's not to like?

What car are we talking about, and what engine? Is the filter you now use an M1-108 vs M108?

Here are a few filters that cross to the M1-108 as a place to start.

Forgot the wix 57356 - my GOTO "UNIVERSAL JAPANESE" wix for Nissan/Subaru/Honda. SI adbv + base end bypass. Smaller "shower head" inlet holes to preshear the oil and prevent media tearing and promote better ADBV operation.

OT but thank you for this! Been trying to figure what larger filter I could run in my GX470!

M1 102 is Fram 3614

Oversize is Fram 3600, M1 209...

Laugh, if you have a 17.5 (or greater) HP mower,
the 3614 is much cheaper than the Kohler / Briggs oil filter.
And if it's not under the hood, a 3600 also works.

Got a STP S3600 on my Sears LT2000 right now...
Cost was less than $2...

Don't forget-use a filter not shown for your application by the filter manufacturer-all liability(filter man) is gone. Remote chance but it can happen.

Yolo lol

After warranty I doubt they give any F

Stewie LoL on you I meant the filter manufacturer warranty not the vehicle warranty. Wix or any filter manufacturer could care less on the year or mileage of the vehicle. They only care if the proper filter(by application not size) is used. After selling auto parts for 32 years, I have been involved in a few warranty issues with Wix. They covered 4 of the 5 that I remember. One not covered used the wrong filter according to Wix's application catalog.

^^^^You are 100% correct sir. Anytime one uses an oversize non spec filter size, the 'filter' warranty in no longer valid no matter the filter manufacturer. Thus if something happens to the engine that is filter related, the manufacturer has no liability. Generally a minor consideration for many, but one that should be noted in the interest of being fully informed.

Plus, once again, no tangible or demonstrable benefit either. Except that it makes some people feel better.

I think that many people have an exaggerated idea of the amount of material an oil filter actually has to hold.
It's not much, which explains the prevalence of smaller filters on newer cars.
If the stock size oil filter reaches its holding capacity over the course of the recommended FCI, then you have problems that no mere oil filter will resolve.
Not much to gain with an oversized filter, IMHO, although they can make sense if the recommended filter is very hard to find or if a longer filter is more easily R&Red in a given application.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Jay from Fram has specifically said on this forum that certain sizes are interchangeable and that they would know this if there were to be an issue with the filter (i.e. the 6607 vs. 7317).

I'm not going to search for the post(s) now, but what motorking actually said is that the first thing the Fram warranty department checks when a claim is filed is for correct/spec application being used. If not, the filter claim is automatically voided/invalidated. This was posted on one of the many oversize filter threads.

In a separate post on the specific topic of using the 7317/14610 instead of the shorty 6607/14612 in one of his personal vehicles, a Nissan Z iirc, he uses the longer 7317 instead of the spec 6607. But he is willing to assume the no filter warranty risk however small of using the longer filter application.

Fwiw personally, when it comes to using the 7317/14610 instead of the 6607/14612 as long as room permits, I'd do it too. Same for SAE cousins 4967/14476 to the longer 4386/14477. Other than being ~.5" longer with more media, specs are the same. Many Nissans spec the shorty but have room for the longer filter. But that's just me.

So they can be used interchangeably but that doesn't change that there would be no manufacturers filter warranty in effect when using the longer non spec application.
