Oversize or "long" version of PF44 - anyone ?

Just picked up a Chevy Cavalier with the 2.4 L DOHC engine for my daughter.

I'm looking for a longer version of that thimble-sized PF44 that is on there. Anyone know of one ?

My wife has a Sunfire with the simple old 2.2L OHV engine. A pint-sized PF47 (PH3387A or 51040) is specified for that one but I use a PH3980 (51036) size filter - nearly twice the length of the original. Not only much more filter area, but also much much easier to install and remove due to the larger size.

I used to have a 2.4L in my old '96 Cavalier LS, it was a good, powerful motor

Can't say the rest of the car was good, but hopefully it'll turn out for you!

The oversized version of the PF44 is the PF58. This is a popular choice for the LS1 Camaros and Firebirds. When I had my 98 Firebird I always ran the longer PF58 sized filters on it.

Gary and Patman - thankyou !

In the sunlight today, I could see that the filter that is actually on the engine right now is an AC Delco PF45. Checking the Wix site shows that the PF45 is essentially 1.5" longer than the PF44. PF44 is however the original size the manual calls for. The nominal micron rating for the Wix version of the smaller PF44 is 19, but is only 25 for the larger Wix version of the PF45.

And checking the Wix site again for the PF58 (Wix 51522), I see that it's just slightly shorted than the PF45 (Wix 51045) although still much longer than the PF44 (Wix 51042), but it has a nominal micron rating of 15.

Aha ! Looking at Donaldson's website for the first time ever, I see that you can search for filters based on multiple criteria. So you can put in thread size, gasket diameter, perhaps can diameter, and then see what comes out. Then cross reference those results on the Wix website. Got it !

I don't have a WIX master catalog, so I have to get creative. Wix is a great xref ..but you can't "search" the site. Baldwin frequently has a "long version/short version" offering, if available. Donaldson, in spin-on filters anyway, has a great selection. The Donaldson site has a search feature. There you just take any unique characteristic (thread pitch, for example) and plug it into the search engine. With a little experience (remembering what gasket size you're looking for), you can extract the applicable numbers. You then plug those numbers back into Baldwin to see if they have "longer/shorter" stuff ..and then into WIX to get their data on the same filter(s) ..if they carry it. It seems a little pains taking from the outside, but after a few years of zipping through them, you don't notice it.
