Overfilled ? 3.5L honda

Changed the oil in my '05 Vue today @ 2600mi exactly. Came out like WATER. Thinnest oil i've ever seen!

I put in about 4.8-4.9 quarts(very educated guess judging by the oil I had) of Havoline GF-4 5w-20. This stuff is loaded with moly, so I'm not worried about changing out the moly-rich factory fill too early.

Once the engine is on and the oil is being circulated throughout the engine, there is basically no way the crankshaft will be touching the oil still in the sump, and sloshing it around, correct? The engine is spec'd for 4.5 quarts.

My 2.4L Honda calls for 4.4 quarts. It takes 5 quarts. The actual complete capacity according the technical manual that dealerships have, it holds 5.6 quarts. 4.4qts is for a quick fill assuming some oil is still left in the oil pump/pan etc. Your fine. Go by the dipstick level. I had this problem recently but found out via the web that it's normal to go above what your owner's manual calls for. Can't go wrong following the dipstick. My Chevy Colorado 4X4 is loaded with moly after feeding it 15-oz of Valvoline Synthetic Oil Treatment with my Mobil 1 oil change. That 15-oz treatment has the same amount of moly as 10 quarts of your Havoline.... got overflowing Boron too!

So how do like those apples??.... ha-ha ... he-he!

That Honda 3.5L factory fill has a rough startup that I noticed in the wife's 2004 Odyssey and the fuel economy was awful. The Havoline 5w-20 should be an improvement in the both areas. You are within 1/2 quart of the recommended fill so you should be fine.

My S2000 calls for 5.1 at fill or 5.7 at overhaul but I pour in 6 each change and it still just barely reaches the top of fill line on the dipstick.

My 01' Accord 4 cyl. calls for 4.5 qts.(of 5w20)
but I have to put 4.75 qts. to fill it. I notice
that the initial dipstick level seems to go up a fraction after I drive the car a day or two. I just changed it to Mobil 1 Advanced Formula 5w30 SJ that I had in my stash. Does anybody know if that vintage Mobil 1 had Moly? PS. I used a PureOne filter and plan on doing a 6k OCI now that I'm out of warranty. Any thoughts?

Does anybody know what is the max that a 7th gen (01-05) civic can take. My manual specs 3.4 but I put in 3.5 and I hate having to keep that .5 quart around so I was wondering if I can pour in the extra .5 quarts to make it 4 quarts.

as with most Hondas you will need that 1/2 quart between changes for top ups. You can overfill most engines by at least 1/2 quart without any danger, in fact most guys who track their cars will overfill up to 1 quart for race events. I think you are safe with an extra 1/2 quart but I myself would keep the oil level at the top of the dipstick and you will surely need the 1/2 quart for top up before your next oil change. Not that bad really because you don't need to buy an extra quart for top up purposes. My two vehicles take exactly 5 quarts, but that means I need to purchase 6 quarts to have some available for top up in between changes.
