Over 3000 miles?

When you guys are running oil for more than 3000 miles do you still change the oil filter? I see some people running synthetic for 15,000 miles and more (Same oil filter) or not? I am wondering because I am using Mobil clean 5000/Napa gold filter and plan on changing every 5000 miles. Will this be good enough?
 
I reuse filters as per Honda manual. Good filter is fine for 10k at least. I drain it and reuse. It's good practice with dino oil.
 
Just because you drain it though that is not cleaning it...what about all the dirt and [censored], wont that impede flow? Or just bypass the filter media through the bypass valve? I have cut some filters open after 3000 miles and they looked ready for a new one.
 
The filter is my fly in the ointment for Edge etc. I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the same filter for 15k, therefore tack on the price of 3 filters instead of one and oil lost by changing them.
 
Just some food for thought, visual inspection of filter pleats does not tell the whole story. Unless it is completely plugged which is unlikely in 3K of driving on most any oil. Partical counts also have to be considered as well as flow rates which is practically impossible to confirm in a street driven application.

YOu should PM Gary Allen. He has a lot of knowledge of filters.

I'd say 10k is MAX a good filter could go in ideal driving conditions...6k is more realistic but to each his own...I change my oil every 4k so not a worry for me.

That should work very well.
 
A NAPA Gold is a very sturdy filter and you could probably get away with at least a year of service under normal driving conditions...I wouldn't worry.

A quality filter like M1, Amsoil, Wix, Pureolator pure one, ect... can last 10,000 miles on a clean, normal running engine.

If you want to do 10-15K oci, use the right filter, no issues.
 
I believe 5K miles on a filter is conservative for "most" applications.

I highlight "most" since I mean "not all".

I have one; 1997 Chevy Tahoe w/5.7l engine, 5qt capacity, and filter the size of a small soup can. I cut one open at 3K miles after a few 6K OCI's and it was spent.

On the contrary my 2005 3L Ford filter looked like it could go 10K and my 1985 911 (3.2L) could go even further. Both of these are much smaller engines with much larger filters and greater sump capacities.

I would consider a filter with true synth media such as EaO, RP, Fleetguard Stratapore, or Donaldson Synteq. EaO or RP would be preferred if you have ADBV issues at startup. In addition to greater holding capacity you'll likely get better filtration.

Use one to 10K and cut it open to see if could go further.
 
I got about 12k on a supertech oil filter on my 06 vibe.

Someone who knows that the filter will actually filter better after it has some miles on it.

My car always runs better right after I wash it.
 
This was common in the old days.
[To change the filter every other oil change.]
I normally change the $5 filter every time, but have recently contemplated the mileage thing, and have left her on and only changed the oil. I have short OCIs.
